Does your 1 yr old take bites?

My almost 14 month old still doesn't get bites.
He shovels pieces of food in his mouth that I cut up. He'll take a handful and put it in his mouth, but if I give him a half sandwich or fourth he will try and shove the whole thing in. I put my hand there or finger to show him where to bite, but he gets frustrated and mad b.c he wants to do it himself. Then I wind up breaking into pieces again.

Anyone else like this? Any other trick to teach him to bite? I try and he just won't. He wants all or nothing, but he's a big eater so when he is about to throw the food he realizes he wants it then shoves it in. Then gives me a look like he's mad at me, but not wasting food. Lol

Yes, DD is 14 months and does take bites. (ETA: but she doesn't really talk, so they are all so different!).

I used to show her by taking really exaggerated bites of toast and things like that.

Would you trust him with a nectarine or something? DD loves to eat apples and nectarines, I just give her the whole thing and she takes little tiny bites.

I would also try cutting pieces of toast into thing strips and giving him a strip so he can take bites. You can even hold onto the other end of the toast.

Thanks. Tho are good ideas. Yes, I trust him with any food. He's really good with food and eating, but the biting stops him. He does have a lot of words and some sign words he learned when he was going to dsycare... B4 I became a SAHM. Plus, his cousin is deaf. Just biting.
I like the apple or nectarine idea. Thanks again.

Re: Does your 1 yr old take bites?

My son is 14months, and also shovels it in Chat Icon Im also overly cautious with feeding (and he's #4 Chat Icon )

my husband has held onto french fries to let him bite and it worked ok. try that, like someone else said, hold the other end of the food for him to bite. Im not big on giving them a big piece of food to hold/bite.

they will learn with time. Chat Icon

Does your 1 yr old take bites?

When teaching DS to bite I would (and sometimes still do if I see him shoveling) say "bite and pull"

Yes DD knows how to takes bites if I hand her something big to hold and eat. Otherwise she shovels in all the pieces i put on her highchair tray. I never really taught her how to take bites. She just did it on her own.

We're working on it. I'll hold a 1/4 sandwich to her mouth...when she sinks her teeth in I say "BITE" and then pull it away.
It's a process!!

dd is only 10.5 mos, but i find that if I give her bigger pieces she will take bites - if i cut things up into little pieces, she shovels them all in her mouth (and then spits them out)

same thing here.

I also will constantly say to her, "chew" and model for her how to bite and chew. It takes practice and time. I have these french toast strips that i put in the toaster oven and let her hold and it helped her take bites. I also would hold onto a strawberry and she would take a bite. Now she's a pro.

My 17 mo old only takes bites when I tell him to. Usually he has it all shoved in his mouth before I can say anything!
