A girl at work's LO has the virus and has stayed out of the office (at our urging) for the last two days. Three of us have four DCs between us and we definitely don't want it passed on to us. But my question is can it be passed on by a parent? If our colleague does not have any symptoms can she still be a carrier? Should we tell her to stay out of the office until her DCs spots have cleared?

We have a work outing tomorrow and I don't want her to miss it if she doesn't have to.

If you are concerned - call your doc. That's what I'd do!

Thanks. I just called. They weren't able to tell me. They advised that my colleague ask her Ped.

Thanks. We are all wondering if she can carry the virus, which is highly contagious by all accounts. I caught chicken pox when I was 30 from a colleague whose kid had the virus.

I think the spots show up after your contagious period has ended.

But IMO, this is a bit unfair. Coxsackie is rampant and honestly you can get it anywhere from anyone. If you're so worried about it, you should stay home.

She may be a carrier or not depending on whether she is immune to that particular strain. However, I would never think of telling a coworker to stay home because her child is sick unless she has to stay home to care for them. If she is not sick, she should not have to use her sick days to appease others' paranoia. Adults can practice good hygiene such as hand washing which would help in preventing transmission of the virus.

Honestly, if my coworkers "made" me stay home I would be pretty livid.

Edited to add: my kids just got over coxsackie ( dd has had it 2x). Yes, it's 5 days of misery but it's not that big of a deal, it's not life threatening or anything.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that we were being unkind. It's not just me, but also my other colleagues in our small group also. We thought that we were doing her a favor by telling her to stay home (not out of her sick days or PTO), especially with her DC not sleeping all night. We would ask her to try to come to our outing tomorrow but not if her DC is still contagious. (It's actually 7 DCs between 5 of us that could be affected).

ETA: I think my question is being misconstrued. We are not "telling" her by ordering her to do anything. She stayed home yesterday because nobody is sleeping at night. We said that she should stay home until her DC is better and it's not coming out of her sick time or PTO.

Also wanted to say that my own kids have been through their fair share of viruses and I've never even caught them myself let alone passed it on to an adult co-worker who practices good hygiene/hand washing.

Re: WWYD re: Coxsackie

I would be pretty upset if someone asked me not to come to work or anywhere because my child was sick. It would be one thing if they told me to stay home to take care of my child but it sounds like you and your coworkers want her to stay home so that she does not pass on this virus. I would think this is dangerous HR territory.

Coxsackie is a very common and not serious virus but it would be equally or more upsetting if it was a more serious disease. I believe it would be a form of discrimination.

My question was actually if a parent can carry the virus. If it can only be passed from child to child then it is a non-issue. She is currently staying at home but if she cannot pass on the virus then we would ask her to try to come to our event tomorrow as we would like her to participate.

I'm really surprised and hurt by these responses. I try to keep away from any drama on these boards. Obviously nobody knows me personally but if you did you would know that I am far from telling, ordering or making anyone do anything they wouldn't want to do.

Maybe you just had a skewed perspective on the issue bc the other parents in your small group agreed on this. Just because you do something that the majority on here thinks is kind of rude doesn't mean you're a drama poster. Kwim? Maybe you should just rethink now that you know how other people would take it.

WWYD re: Coxsackie

There isn't any drama, it's just common opinion that it's absurd to "urge" someone to stay home bc their child is ill. Kids get sick, it is what it is. If your office does this everytime a child is sick I can't imagine anyone is ever there!! Wash your hands, don't touch things on her desk, and you'll be fine.

I am a huge germaphobe, and yet I still think it is totally absurd to urge this woman to stay home.

Realistically, if you work with other people, you have NO idea who is coming down with an illness, whether they have kids or not. The coworker you sat next to in a meeting for an hour today and maybe went out to grab lunch with could come down with a vicious stomach virus this evening. You would have been exposed and not even know it.

Re: WWYD re: Coxsackie

My husband had coxsackie back in October we originally thought it was strep, I believe it can be passed through adults but only 1-2% of adults get symptoms because our immune systems are stronger (this is what the MD told us). DH got it from his sister who is a nanny for a child who recently had the virus. So I definately would stay away from her if she is at work and don't share anything, just because she doesn't have symptoms doesnt mean the virus isn't in her system.

I don't think a parent can carry it if they don't have any symptoms. My DD had it in early July and no one else in my house got it, not even my younger DD. My nephew caught it, though. I was around many people and none of them caught it from me. I think that you all will be fine -- let her come!

Re: WWYD re: Coxsackie

I don't think so. If she doesn't actually have the virus...maybe she's already immune to it. I can't imagine being able to pass it on from that point. Just keep washing your hands.

Re: WWYD re: Coxsackie

DS is currently getting over this. My Pedi said as long as there is a fever and sores then it is contagious. Not sure if that means both together or one or the other.

I'm not a Dr. but if your co-worker does not have a fever or sores then I wouldn't think it was contagious to you...Just if you came into contact with her child while her child had these symptoms.
