Cost of an Oil Change
What is the most money you've ever spent or ever seen an oil change cost?
I know, totally random Q but DH brought our car to some place by his office to get an inspection and O/C and they charged him so much money, we are both absolutely infuriated! I guess it's DH's fault for not asking how much it would cost but honestly, we've both never paid more than $30-$35 so we didn't expect it to be 3x that price!

is labor & tax.

That's what DH just paid...But, the dealer wanted $130 (or so) for synthetic.

I've paid a lot for synthetic oil, which I think lasts twice as long. The dealer has a special for like $40 but I think that's for the blended oil. Inspection is 1 price everywhere I believe, around $40.

I guess that's the issue then, the synthetic oil. Holy crap that shit's expensive! The guy charged DH $35 for the change and then $13/bottle of the oil. It cost nearly $200 with the inspection. We were absolutely shocked! The place also put in a new air filter and wipers without asking us first even though they weren't necessary to pass inspection. We had never gone to a place that didn't at least call before doing that. Oh well! You live and you learn!

Dealer labor rates are much higher than your local mechanic or fast-lube place. A full synthetic oil change will probably cost around $75-100 depending on the type of car and how much oil is needed.

i took mine to the dealer and they charged me 32.95 plus tax but this was not for synthetic... plus another 10 for the inspection.

I just paid $17.95 for an oil change and they did my inspection for $10 (my car is a 2011).

Same here and I about had a heart attack! DH usually brings my truck for oil chg so I was clueless. I called him on the spot & said "We have a problem" he said that is the norm.
I think it's highway robbery!
PS he always does full synthetic

The car I have only takes synthetic, but the first time I took it for an oil change I didn't realize that and almost dropped when I found out!
I think that was the issue! Our car had previously been covered under Toyota's 2 year maintenance plan thing so we didn't pay for oil changes. This was the first one and we're used to paying $20-$30 on our other car depending on where we go. It ends up working out though because we can go longer between oil changes but that first time was super shocking! Also how they broke it down - oil change + each quart of oil.
I guess now the thing to be annoyed at is that the inspection cost nearly $100 because they put in a bunch of stuff in the car that we didn't ok that were not needed to pass inspection - stuff that they would normally call to see if we wanted them to do or not. Stuff that we could have gotten at Auto Zone for half the price and DH could have put in himself
