Need Help with 13 yo and dress- Link to dress in 2nd post
Sorry so long:
My niece is so excited she will be having a boy/girl party, that she will be a teenager and is so excited about this party.
My SIL calls me and asks if I can please go with her and my niece dress shopping on Friday. After I agree she tells me that my niece (who will be 13) already picked out a dress but SIL described it as a "S!!utty dress" and wants me to go to talk her out of it. My niece and I have always been close so I'm sure that why my SIL wants me to talk her out of it but I honestly don't have any idea how to approach it.
I asked SIL what she find objectionable about the dress and she said "it's strapless, too short and very tight." She said that barely "covers her behind".
Any ideas as to how I can gentle steer her in the right direction when choosing a dress?

Re: Need Help with 13 yo and dresses
IMO your SIL needs to tell her NO. She is asking you to be the scapegoat and that is so not fair to you or your niece. Plus, she is only 13, this is only the tip of the iceberg for your SIL.
If your SIL is paying for the dress, the condition that it be appropriate should have been stated from the beginning.
I would tell your SIL that is something she has to deal with.

I agree with this- but you could also ask to see it and give your opinion (and your opinion should be that it's too skimpy).
Tell her that she should dress to impress- not UNdress to impress. Leave something to the imagination, have respect for herself, etc etc etc.
Good luck!

sorry, that is definitely inappropriate for a 13 yo IMO! It's not your problem, it's your SIL's!!

I agree, if SIL has a teenager, then she has to learn the word NO! I have a 16 yo, and it only gets worse, so she pays she says, end of story.

My aunt asked me to go shopping with my Goddaughter. She said any advice she gave her daughter was met with an eyeroll and she was refusing to try stuff on. SO she wanted me to go since she thinks I am cool
This same aunt took me shopping for my 8th grade dance dress for the same reasons. I was very tiny and still in kids clothes. I wanted somethind adult and my mom couldn't deal. My aunt took me and we had SO MUCH FUN. That shopping trip stands out in my mind. It was special and such a great memory. I think it's an honor that your neice respects your opinion and I would go. Just approach it like you have great fashion sense and you know what would look great on her body. Don't even address the other dress if you don't have to. Have her try on others and make such a big deal about them that she forgets all about the skimpy one. When my aunt took me it was like us against my mom, like she didn't know anything and we did... I thought it was cool and had no idea I was being manipulated so badly!!
