Nursing help!

Any recommendations on how to nurse in public without carrying around the "my breast friend pillow". ?!?! My DS is 7 weeks old and I can't seem to nurse any other way without my breast friend (or boppy ) and the cross cradle hold. I can't even get the cradle hold to work with a pillow. I feel like I get stuck in the house because I can't nurse in public/or even in my car without the assistance of the pillow and the perfect position. Does this get better w/ DS's age or am I doomed to constantly bringing a pillow around with me to nurse Chat Icon Any tips are appreciated

Nursing help!

I have no advice because we could never figure out how to use the pillow, but what about starting out a feeding with the pillow and then having DH or someone slowly pull the pillow out? Sorry, I have no other ideas! If you need to go out, then I say just bring the pillow!

Re: Nursing help!

Even though the pillow was helpful in the beginning i wish i had never used it because now I feel completely inept at feeding without it. I think bottle feeding would be easier in public and one of the whole reasons I was breast feeding was to always have food on hand/convenience down the roadChat Icon

Re: Nursing help!

It definitely gets easier once they're holding their head up! Have you tried using receiving blankets rolled up as support - you might want to try that at home because you could probably pull that off outside too.

i wish I had better advice because I do feel your pain. I just tried to adjust my arms to get a comfortable position. do you know they make a travel size boppy pillow in a carrying case?

We use the laid back position which makes it easiy bto nurse just about anywhere. The only time I need a pillow is if I'm laying down in bed. Maybe try this or other positions at home to master something that will work on the go. If not, DC should gain more control soon which will help.

Re: Nursing help!

eventually it gets easier as they get bigger...in the beginning they are so tiny and it is harder..i nurse in the car a lot and I use her blacket propped on the arm rest under my arm and lean in to her...just takes practice to see what works..now i can cross my legs and do it but i still feel more comfortable with a blanket under her head for a little extra support! and i use an udder cover that goes over my neck!

It definitely gets easier!! With lo2 even more so, I couldn't believe how much I struggled with lo1!

If you're nursing one the left side, Prop your left ankle/leg up on your right knee. I find it easier to position my arm with some support with my knee. If it's windy I'll also tuck my cover between my arm and knee. Hope that makes sense! Gl!

OK thanks ladies I'll try some of these tips! I have tried "laid back BFing" but his nose always smushes into my breast and he can't breath..not sure what i'm doing wrong (this actually happens with the cradle hold too).

Re: Nursing help!

Can I ask a stupid question? Are you using 2 hands? One to hold your baby and one to hold your breast? I am big breasted and if I don't hold my breast, I would certainly suffocate DD.

I love the travel boppy! it's not as cushiony as the regular boppy but it does the trick when I have to nurse in the car, at someone else's house, etc. GL!

Re: Nursing help!

Have you tried the football hold? I found this the easiest with and without a pillow when they were little.

I agree about this. With my first son, this was the easiest position for the first month or 2. With my second, he was born at 9lb3oz and was really too big for that hold to be comfortable. When I am nursing and don't have a pillow, I find that having somewhere to put my elbow works, usually an armrest. Though, even more comfortable than that for me, is propping my feet up with my knees bent, so my knees/legs basically do the job of the pillow. HTH!

Re: Nursing help!

I used the football hold in the beginning but now he is just to big for me to work it (he's probably around 12-13 pounds) (especiially without a pillow to support my wrist). In answer to the 1 vs 2 hands I have to use 2 ( 1 to support the breast or else I would smother him everytime )

Re: Nursing help!

It gets easier as they get older. Do you use a nursing cover when you are out? This will make you feel more comfortable about shifting around trying to find something that works and not worrying about exposing yourself.
Try it out at home and just find a position that feels right without the pillow.

This happens to DD too. I just use my finger to push down on the area where her nose is smushed in, lol.
