16 Month Old Son
I have a 16 months old son. Call me crazy but he is only saying a few words here and there. He also doesn't drink out of a straw cup. I guess I comparing my child to other children :(
Another big problem I have with him lately is eating :( he screams in his high chair. I finally let hiim out and go play and i chase him around feeding him.
Please tell me i amjust crazy or any suggestions would be great
TIA

Re: 16 Month Old Son
You are crazy My best friend has a 2.5 year old DD and she is the same way about eating and at 16m didn't say a peep. DD is 22 months and at 16m wasn't too huge with her words, she had a word explosion beginning 18-20 months.
I subscribe to "when they're hungry, they'll eat" but I know this might not work for every kid

Thank you :) i think i needed to hear that. I guess bc my son is in daycare twice a week and the lady mentioned how the other kids are drinking out of straws etc.
Is that online "when they're hungry, they'll eat"?

Re: 16 Month Old Son
My nephew just got evaluated at 20 months because he really doesn't have a lot of words - I think he only says 'No' and maybe dada & mama. He didn't qualify for any services because he fully understands words, he just doesn't say them (e.g., go get the ball, and he picks up the ball).
DD just turned 1 and she only says Dada, Doggy, yes, and this (although I don't think she really says yes and this correctly, they are just her 'everything' words) and I'm always concerned that she's behind. I think it's just what we do as Moms!

Re: 16 Month Old Son
My 16 month old says bye-bye, hello, and cup, and that's about it. She understands everything - I think that is the most important at this age. She does drink out of a straw cup but has no idea how to use a regular sippy cup, I started her on the straw cup at about 6 months. She does love to eat but a lot of kids don't. I wouldn't worry.
My other two kids were pretty much the same way. Now at 3.5 they talk non-stop. They had a had a language explosion somewhere around 18 months. At 26 months they were conversational.

That is just it - he understands everything - get the ball, let's go inside, outside, upstairs etc. He will not wave bye bye and does not say bye bye. He does constantly say letters of the alphabet - knows what sound a cow and puppy make.
I guess like blustar214 said that just what we do as moms :)
thank you ladies

Re: 16 Month Old Son
DD is 18 months only says a handful of words (and mama is not one of them ) was a really good eater and now barley eats anything.
DRIVES me CRAZY i constanly worry and compare her to others which i know i shouldnt understands everything i say but doesnt use to many words.
She also throws tantrums and screams and cries and most of the time i know its cause she cant say what she wants. Im wishing everyday for her to be able to talk so at least sometimes i know waht she is screaming about

Re: 16 Month Old Son
he is FINE!
this is our fault but over son didn't start drinking from a straw until 2 years!! We just always gave him sippys with a valve, not straw.
having only a few (if any) words at 16 months it totally normal!

Re: 16 Month Old Son
You have to try to not compare you child to other children. I know how hard that is though. DS is 19 months and is just starting to say some words mama, dada, nana, nanana(banana), melmo (elmo), bye bye. I was so stressed before this month because he was saying nothing! It will happen when your DC is ready!

Re: 16 Month Old Son
You are crazy No worries at all. I have a 16 month old DD and she is the same way. A handful of words. No-no, baba, up, momma, dadda, nana (banana)- thats about it. She literally JUST started drinking from a straw last week. One minute she couldn't the next she could. It will click for him. just keep trying. Also I noticed she does better with soft straws then the plastic hard straws in most sippys. DS drank from a cup at 6 months so I was nervous. But it's so true, they all develop at different rates, when they are ready they will do it.
Oh and the eating thing is so annoying but I notice it goes in spurts and it's true, when they are hungry they will eat but I know all too well how frustrating it is!

Re: 16 Month Old Son
My DS is only 13 months, but at his 1 year checkup the ped asked about words and I said none. He told me that it's totally normal for boys not to start talking until 18 months or later. He also said that if he understands things then he's doing just fine. So I wouldn't worry about your DS there.
My DS can't use a straw cup either. He's so used to the valve sippies that he tries to tip the straw cup up like a bottle and then nothing comes out. I just keep offering and hope he'll get it one day. I'm sure your DS will get the hang of it eventually!
As far as eating, I think the heat affects babies too. He may just not feel like eating b/c it's so hot out. I wouldn't force it too much, you'll just drive yourself nuts.

Re: 16 Month Old Son
To be honest at DD's 15 month visit, they didn't even ask about words. Just asked if she babbled in her own little languague. At 18 months they asked if she could say maybe like 10 words? Dont' worry about the words- he is still young for that.
And as for the eating- that is normal too. DD HATES eating. She hates sitting in her high chair. It's a battle to get her to eat. He's just asserting his new found independence!

Re: 16 Month Old Son
DD was a very late talker!
As for teh straw, practice at home but with a regular straw NOT a non drip one. My DD is almost 2 and still can't drink out of those, heck, I have trouble drinking out of them but I give her a regular straw and she drinks out of it every day (that's all she uses actually).
I always refer to THIS when I worry about milestones! (thanks to Liza for posting it years ago)

16 Month Old Son
I was worried about my 15 month old. called EI, they said not to have him evaluated for speech until 18 mos bc of other things he was doing. they sent me some info on developing his speech. A week before he turned 18 months the words started. If those are your only concerns, I wouldn't worry yet.
