Question about foods??
So being only 4 weeks pregnant, I have a few question about foods.
I know that tuna and shellfish are definite no nos. But what about other kinds of fish like salmon and tilapia? I hear they are a good source of protein. If chick peas are supposed to be very good, will hummus be just as good.

Re: Question about foods??
The other fish you are supposed to limit to 2 servings a week due to mercury.
I am keeping it to 1 serving or so because I figure sometimes I underestimate a "serving size".
There are only 4 fish on the DO NOT eat list, all of which, seem less common for me: Tilefish, Shark, and 2 other things I never heard of ate. Tuna you are also supposed to avoid albacore and chunk light has the lowest mercury so is the best choice. Salmon, tilapia, mahi, etc. are all fine just limit intake.

Edited to add: hummus is a good source of the bean protein. It does have other ingredients which add some calories/fat but I consider it very healthy and great way to get that bean protein. Especially if you dip veggies in it.
You can also add beans to other meat dishes - chili, pasta dishes, etc. that way you get the health benefits without having to eat a whole bowl full of just beans.

Question about foods??
You can have canned tuna once a week. There are very few "definite" no-nos when it comes to eating and pregnancy. There are a lot of suggestions, and many OBs have COMPLETELY different lists of foods they recommend their patients stay away from. At this point, you're so early that you can just wait to talk to your OB and get their list, rather than stress about it already.
Just for an example: some say no peanuts while pregnant because some studies have shown it can cause a peanut allergy in the baby. Others say the COMPLETE opposite! As long as you stay away from alcohol and take your prenatals, you're in great shape until you talk to your OB.

Re: Question about foods??
My midwife told me that anything in moderation is fine. Humus/chickpeas, fish (I prefer wild caught to farm raised), shellfish, and tuna are good sources of protein. I'd limit tuna b/c of the mercury content and cold cuts because of the nitrates, but an occasional sandwich isn't going to hurt.

tuna and shellfish are not definite no-nos. actually there are very few foods that are DEFINITE no-nos. you can eat most things as long as its in moderation. tuna or shellfish here or there won't do any harm whatsoever.
you can pretty much eat anything in moderation.

Re: Question about foods??
You can eat tuna and shellfish as long as they are cooked - so no sushi or rare tuna - and eaten in moderation.
You need to limit your fish servings with mercury. Here's a good resource:
