i knew it would be expensive but...

day care is friggin expensive!!!

Just looked at a place, I think they were really good.

part time - 2 days per week would be $231. That's almost the difference between me going from working full time to working part time. I guess we have a lot to think about... and budget cutting to do.

I don't get it. We aren't made of money but make a decent amount with a relatively low monthly mortgage and day care costs are still killing us! Something just is not right here.

Re: i knew it would be expensive but...

It really is horrible. This is exactly why I am going to be PTWM. I would pretty much be working solely to put our DC in day care. Makes no sense to us. We are fortunate that my DH's work schedule has him home a few days out of the week. So he will have the babes while I am at work & vice versa. Is this an option for you guys?

I could work part time. So the cost of two days is almost the difference between full time and part time for me. DH works typical business hours. I work overnights so if I did a weekend night dh would be home during the day while I sleep. And when I work during the week I'll have to stay up with baby - and nap when she naps. I think I like the idea of working part time better but I'm not sure yet.

I would look at some other places -$231 sounds very high for only 2 days. I'm not saying it's cheap by any means but you can probably get a better rate

Re: i knew it would be expensive but...

Definately check out other places including home day cares. My DD has been in 2 different home day cares since she was born and at the first we paid $75/day and where she is now we pay $50/day.

I'm nauseous thinking about how much i'm going to be paying in January when i'm off maternity leave and i have 2 in day care. DD will be starting pre school in the fall ( which is a large bill in and of itself) but i still have to pay her daycare for her after care and for the days when she doesnt have preschool. Its still worth it for me to work but this was a huge reason why i was so hesitant on having #2. I guess we'll figure it out.

Post on the parenting board for recommendations

Look around.

I pay 184 per week for 2 days. That includes early drop off.

Re: i knew it would be expensive but...

this includes early drop of and I don't have to have set days. That's important to me since I don't have a set schedule. It's also a chain place obviously i'm also paying for the name.

Re: i knew it would be expensive but...

You're lucky you were able to find p/t care for an infant; those places are rare!

DD was all set to start a 2 year-old program in the fall when I went back to work, and we thought we were getting a steal by paying $1200. With two, it's going to be another mortgage payment. Chat Icon That said, caring for children is hard and the caretakers should be well-paid. I don't want to hand my babies off to the lowest bidder, KWIM?

Check into certified in home daycare.

That's where my DD goes and I pay less than that for 4 days a week.

Re: i knew it would be expensive but...

I'm actually surprised you were able to find part time for 2 days a week. Most places either don't do part time for infants or require a 3 day minimum. The prices are much better if you do more days/ week. Will you consider doing 3 days of daycare and work that extra day? That might be worth while in terms of income to daycare expense ratio.

its horrible. thats why the fact that i can collect unemployment right now doesn't hurt as much as it would have before baby.

No the two days a week is based on me working full time. I work full time overnights three nights a week. I don't need more than two days of day care.

Re: i knew it would be expensive but...

We hired a p/t Nanny outside of my home. She is $10/hr which isn't that bad considering I only would need her maybe 2 days a week. My DH is home a lot. I found her through Care.com; it was a good experience with the website.

DD is signed up for tutor time in Bayside, we are paying 1385 for FT 8-6 care, they don't do PT as all infants have their own crib.. We also looked at kiddie academy and it was a little more money.
