would you go for a home inspector...
that your real estate agent recommends....i'm hearing horror stories of people using the HI thru the agents and basically hid some findings...like not making certain things a big deal when they really were....
can you recommend one....Thanks!!!

As long as you trust your realtor I would.
If your offer is through the listing agent and you have no experience with them then you would probably want to consider using an independent person.
I personally used Tausher Cronacher home engineers, as they were recommended by the LI housing partnership and if you mention you had gotten the number from there you got a discount.

I recommend Tony from Sundance inspections- all my buyers love him- I never force them to use him- I actually met him thru a buyer who got him from the NYPD recommend list
the idea that a realtor would be in on having a home inspector "fix" the inspection is crazy to me
but then again I normally point of 80% of the things the home inspection will find during the showing

I tell my clients to pick someone from the ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) website. Regardless of where the recommendation comes from, you want to make sure that the inspector has the experience necessary to uncover problems so that you can make an informed decision.

You should be able to go to your real estate agent for recommendations. I hope you wouldn't be working with an agent that you didn't like and trust.
I prefer it when my customers get their own recommendations from friends and family. But when they ask me for recommendations, I always provide A FEW names of inspectors that I have had positive experiences with and believe do a good job for the buyer, rather than just one name. That way, the buyer can do his/her own research into the qualifications, reputation, etc. of the inspector before making a choice.
As an agent, I always have the best interests of my customers at heart. It's pretty short-sighted to want to gloss over problems with a house and "trick" someone into buying. I would rather my customers make informed decisions and have a great outcome with their home purchase, so that they will know I did right by them and recommend me to others.
I recommend inspectors that do a thorough inspection of the house, of course. But that's only part of their job, in my opinon. The other part is explaining things for buyers and putting things in context for them. Because I've seen very thorough inspectors scare the life out of buyers by using a lot of jargon and pointing out a lot of things, but not explaining the significance. A home inspection is stressful and can be scary! So the best inspectors, imo, are the ones who will point everything out, but also explain to the buyers if it's normal wear and tear, if it's something that's normal for a home of that age, if it's a minor issue, if it's a major issue, if something should be fixed right away, how it can be fixed, etc. -- in a language they can understand. They need to make the information accessible to average home buyers, most of whom don't have the inspector's expertise.
It's also important that the inspector can generate their reports quickly. Most take 24-48 hours and then email out their report, but I recently had one that took a full week to generate a hard copy report, and then mailed it the old-fashioned way. As a buyer, you want these issues resolved asap - it's in your best interest to go to contract as soon as possible.

Why don't you ask your real estate attorney if he/she knows a good home inspector. Or ask friends or family members? Or ask people on this site to recommend theirs (or search for good reviews of inspectors on this site).

Dont get me wrong I like my real estate agent. But in general my friends and professionals are telling me their experience with everyone invovled in their home buying expereience both good/bad. So now I have all this information in my head and I feel like everyone is contradicting and that my head is going to explode!

Just remember that when it comes to real estate, everyone is an expert! Lots of "armchair real estate agents" out there. I am sure everyone who is giving you advice is well-meaning, but sometimes you just have to take it with a grain of salt.
And if you like and trust your agent, that's great, but as a buyer, I think you always want to be proactive and do some independent research. And trust your gut! It's a big investment, but if you are educated about what you are doing and confident in your decision-making, it shouldn't be too stressful.
