Question about first OB visit

So I just scheduled my first appointment with a new practice (Anne and Jules Gottlieb with LIJ)

When I called they scheduled me for an appt to see the doc...and 15 mins later for the sonogram. I asked if I would see the doctor after the sonogram and they said no.

Is this usually the case with some places...or if you go to this office? I am not sure what happens during the first visit...but I feel that 15 minutes is not a lot of time, and kind of odd that the doc doesn't do your sonogram or speak to you afterwards. So What goes on during this first visit and does this seem the norm?

I am switching from an office in RVC where there is one OB which takes his time to meet with you...and does the sonogram.....so just seems weird to me.

At my first OB visit I saw the doctor first then the sono tech did the sonogram, but then I saw the doctor afterwards and he explained everything to us.

Re: Question about first OB visit

At my office (I'm OOS), the first appointment is around 8 weeks. The OB himself does the sono at the first appointment (it's internal). You start in the OB's office and talk for about 15 minutes, then you go into the exam room where he does the sono. Then you go back to the office to discuss any questions. The appointment actually took almost an hour, which I thought was insane! (They were running unbelievably late, too, that morning and I was told I had the 2nd appointment of the day -- but as it turns out, they had some emergencies come up right beforehand, which can't be helped at any practice.)

After I met with the OB after the sono, I had about 8 vials of blood drawn. They discussed the results of the blood draw 4 weeks later at my next appointment.

I was never pregnant in NY so I don't know if it's different there. I know I only get 3 sonos my whole pregnancy, whereas I think most NYers get at least 4.

If you feel rushed or like you're uncomfortable with the office, you're so early along you can definitely switch. Not sure what would happen with the insurance billing, though, since the 2nd office would likely repeat some of what's done at the first. Definitely come armed with a huge list of questions (assuming you have them). That's always the best thing for talking to the doctor himself. The only reason my appointment took so long was our OB was shooting the sh* a lot of the time with us. My daughter was only 13 1/2 months at my first appointment and got really cranky sitting through all of that. Not so fun. First pregnancy, my first appointment took about half as long but was the same as far as met with the OB, OB did the sono, we discussed. The first sono was just to get an EDD (since I have always had very irregular cycles) by measuring the baby and to see/hear the heartbeat. It's not a very long sono.

with my first appt with my son, they did a full exam and then the US and then we went into the doc's office and chatted for about 20 mins.

This sounds about normal. Now I am starting to question if I should just stay with my regular OB or not. Chat Icon

I may go here for my first visit and see how it goes...and see how the following visits usually go....plus they will see me earlier then my regular OB. I guess I can change if I don't feel comfortable with the office, but I am not sure how that works with insurance.

i also go to the Anne and Jules Gottlieb OBs.

at my first appointment, i met the doctor (i had just switched to her), she did an internal exam. That took about 15 minutes. Then i got the sono done and then bloodwork. I asked to speak with her after the sono so we spoke for about 5 mins.

She also scheduled me for a second appointment a few days later which was a complete waste of time. She just went over the sono results again with me and told me the official due date and answered questions.

That's odd that they would have you come back to discuss the sono and give you a due date when all that could have been done in the first appointment right?

About how long was your total first visit (if you can remember)?

Overall do you like this office? What OB do you see there?

my sono was done after the appt with the nurse. the tech told me the HB and pointed things out, but there was no follow up with my doctor.

I'm actually changing doctors because my current OB/GYNs practice is just way too big.

Will you start with the new doctor when your next scheduled appointment would have been with your current doctor? Or will you change and see the new doctor before?

Exactly - that follow up appointment was just a way to get more money outta me, i think. I guess the Dr didn't really have time to go over everything the first time (i wasn't scheduled to see her after the sonogram, i just asked to).

i don't really remember but i think that first appointment took about an hour.

i use Dr Schulz and like her. She's good about keeping appointments which is extremely important to me. One thing that i don't mind but others might about her is that she doesn't give you the nitty-gritty details unless you ask for them. For example, i have no idea what the heart rate is, what my levels of hcg / progesterone / etc are ... if i asked, she'd tell me, but personally, i just don't care Chat Icon

I'm actually in a tricky spot. My NT is already scheduled based on a referral from my current doc. So, I have to call my new doc to see if I can adjust the referral, as I want all the data/files from the NT to go to new doc. So, my hope is that my next prenatal is with new doc. We'll see.

Hi! I see Dr. Shulz, too! I really, really like her. I feel very comfortable with her and she takes her time with you. I don't feel rushed when I have my list of questions. The ladies at the front desk are wonderful, her US tech is wonderful, but her medical assistants aren't the most warm and friendly people.

As for my first prenatal appt. I had the US first (which they had to insert in me dry since lubrication could interfer with the pap results - maybe that's why you're seeing the dr first) and then had my exam with the Dr. She spent about 30 mins with us. All she said about the US was that everything looked great and on target. After the exam I then had blood work done. I was there for about 1-1 1/2 hrs. MrsRapz, I didn't even think to ask those questions, to be honest (lol), and you're right, the information is not offered up, unless something was wrong. You will have the remainder of your sonograms at LIJ and I would recommend making the apts for those at 730 (first of the day) or 8 am, otherwise, you will be waiting a long time.

Good luck!

Nope. Which bothers my sister (she sees her, too), but I have nothing to compare it to, so I don't mind. Assuming you're not high-risk you will only have about 3 sonos at LIJ.

i actually make all my appointments for 7pm since i don't get out of work till 6. I haven't had a problem yet with waiting for her. Last time, there were 10 people ahead of me in the waiting room, but they were waiting for different doctors.

as for the sono's, the NT Scan (at 12 weeks) and level II anatomy scan are both done at LIJ Katz center. If you have any other sono's, those could be done in the office itself.

Re: Question about first OB visit

I am scheduled to see Dr. Hippolyte. I think I am going to go and try it out...especially since they will see me a little earlier than my current OB. And if I don't like how some of the things end up working out....or feel rushed then I will just make the next appointment with my current OB...or another "first" pre-natal appt with them since they do not see you until you have missed two periods.

I was pregnant a few years back...and I remember spending a lot of time with my OB discussing different things and doing the sono. So I guess I will have to see with this new one.

I see Dr. Hippolyte also. She has been great so far. From my experience you see her first where she does the internal stuff first and then you see the sono tech and then you speak with her after to discuss the sono and any questions you may have. She goes over everything else with you also.

I rarely have to wait long for her, too. I was referring to making your sono appts early at LIJ.

That's why I asked if I would see her after my sono and they told me no. So hopefully that is not the case and she does. I would want to know from her perspective as my doctor how everyting is goin.
