Have you discussed BFing with your SO

it's very early yet for me (9wks)
DH thinks it's going to be harder on me because then I'll be "breastfeeding everywhere"

I was thinking of doing BF in the beginning and trying to go to formula at 8 or 10 weeks since I don't want to pump when I go back to work but idk if that's unhealthy for the baby or what?

Just curious what everyone else was thinking of doing

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

I BFed my son for 3 months until I went back to work, then switched to formula

With this one...I plan on going as long as possible, and I am going to try to pump at work!

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

IDK if I will even be able to BF (I had a breast reduction about 16 yrs ago) but I am praying that I will. If I am able to this is my game plan, I will BF & pump, which will allow DH the experience of feeding the babes, for as long as possible. If my supply starts to dwindle or trail off once I go back to work part time after 11 wks, than I will supplement w/ formula. If not than I plan on BFing until at least 6 month old.

There is no doubt that it is a big commitment but you have to do what feels right for you and your DC. Its always easier if our SO is agreeable and goes along w/all of our choices but thats not always the case. If stopping BF at a certain point, or not doing it at all, NO MATTER the reason works for you than that is your choice and right as the DC's mother.

Good Luck!!!!!

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

I hope I can breast feed. DH already told me to make sure I have enough of a supply for when I go back to work because he can BF baby... hes so silly.

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

My goal is to nurse only for 3 months.

From 3-6 months I will alternately nurse and bottle feed (breast milk).

6 months on will be bottle fed BM only.

I have discussed it with DH - he's on board with me.

You know what they say about planning so I'm hoping for the best.

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

DD will be 1 month on monday and I've been EBF.

DH and I did talk about it before she was born and he know I wanted to BF and was all for it.

The first week was the hardest and the most painful and DH tried to give me an out and say maybe we can supplement but I said I didn' t want to give up so soon and will give it another week.

By the second week DD and I both got the hang of it and it's been great! I should be getting a pump soon and will introduce her to the bottle after 4 weeks. I plan on pumping when i go back to work as well.

our ped said to aim for 6 months would be fantastic so that is my mini goal. my ultimate goal is 1 year

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

I trid to have aplan on BFing and I had to just go with the flow when the time came. Our plans don't always work, we don't always feel the way we think we'll feel when it's happening etc. It's definitely not something I would worry too much about at this point. Chat Icon

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

I EBF'ed for 15.5months with my DD. She did not receive one ounce of formula. She also never took a bottle, but I was home with her so that didn't matter.

It is really difficult to get the hang of, but if you have the determination to push through, you WILL be successful and be able to give your baby all the amazing nutrients and milk that your body naturally makes for him/her Chat Icon

BF'ing was my decision, I never discussed it with DH because I was so adamant about it. Amazing as he is, he supports me with all my decisions.

We also saved a TON of money which is a complete added bonus! Chat Icon

ETA: I think it's amazing that you want to give your baby 8-10 weeks of breastmilk. Even those few weeks are great for your LO. Pumping is difficult but can be done if you choose to change your mind. I know so many friends in all careers who pump at work and they don't even notice anymore.

i am planning to bf. when i return to work i will pump. At about 8-10 weeks will start putting the baby on bottles so that it will get usedto them. all is a grandiose plan, but we shall see wha happens when the baby is here.. I have discussed this with dh.. long before i was even pregnant.

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

DH is fine with whatever happens.

DD wouldn't latch so I pumped for a month for her.

I'm definitely going to try again and if this baby won't latch I'll pump again.

I'm also going to take a BF class this time. Maybe it'll help.

Re: Have you discussed BFing with your SO

I knew DH was very pro-BFing before we started TTC. No one in my family BFed. As I read about the benefits and learned more about things, I decided I was going to BF. Although it was very difficult at the beginning, DH was very supportive. I stuck with it and EBF for 15 months. I plan to EBF this baby too.

I BF my DS for 1 year and I pray that I'll be able to do the same for this baby.

To answer your question... switching to formula after a couple of weeks is not unhealthy. BF for as long as you can/want to bc your child will still benefit from it. You could even BF in the morning/night and then formula feed throughout the work day if you choose to. You have to do what's best for both of you!! I pumped for the first 7 weeks bc my DS was having a hard time latching, and it is not easy to do!

My dh would be on board with whatever I wanted to do. I bottle fed last time around and plan on doing the same this time.
