In lieu of flowers, send donations...
My PhD advisor's wife passed away recently, and they asked for donations to her scholarship fund instead of flowers for the service. What is a good amount to donate, as a former student of his?
I just wanted to hear what you all thought.

I think anything you can afford would be appreciated. With that said, I would give either 36 or 50.

I'd probably spend the same amount or a bit more than I would've on the arrangement. $50 tops.

In Hebrew the word "life" (chai) has a numerical value of 18, so it is common to give gifts in multiples that denomination.

True, but my advisor and his family are Catholic. I'm not sure they know of the tradition.

They also probably won't know how much you donated.

They shouldn't inform the family of the amount. Typically they'll just give them a list of donors with their addresses, indicating that "gifts in memory of xxx have been received from the following people". They give addresses so that the family can send you a thank you note if they so choose.

Re: In lieu of flowers, send donations...
When my BF's grandparents died within weeks of each other, I gave one $100 donation to Alzheimer's assoc in their honor so if it was one person, I would give $25- 50
