How much does/did your newborn sleep?
Riley is now 3 weeks old and we had problems with her being a sleepy baby when I brought her home from the hospital and it impacted her time spent nursing and she lost a lot of weight because of it.
I am now pumping and supplementing with formula and she is certainly eating enough. She eats 3-3.5 ounces at each feeding, ever 2-3 hours during the day and every 3-4 hours at night. Yesterday, for example, she had 27 ounces total.
But she is still such a sleepy baby, especially in the afternoon. She has been sleeping right now pretty much since about 11am! She has woken up enough for feedings but then falls back esleep.
My Mom and sisters keep asking me if it is normal for her to sleep so much.
Of course they don't see her during her "awake" hours because it is early in the morning and in the evening, after dinner, and they aren't here at those times.

Yes it is normal. My son is now 11 weeks and still sleeps all the time. The max awake time he can do is an hour or hour and a half max. He is up for an hour and then takes a 2-3 hour nap, eat, play and repeat.
My 1st son was the same way. They just need A LOT of sleep.

Melissa, Teaghan was the same way! She would sleep so much that my mom would say the same thing to me, my Dr said its totally normal, thats what babies do! Teaghan still sleeps a lot at almost 4 months!

From what I've always heard newborns do sleep a lot. We were one of the unlucky ones. Ds would sleep at most 45mins at a time.

My almost 4 month old is just starting to sleep less...I would wake her when the day naps went over 4 hours...
I had weight issues too..but eventually it all worked itself out! Nursing is exhausting for hem

DD slept ALL day. She ate, slept, pooped, repeat....
DS never slept more than 20 minutes at a time.
Most newborns sleep ALOT

DS is 2 weeks old, he's sleeping most of the time. If he's awake it's generally just to eat.

Enjoy it! My 6 week old sleeps 4 hours at night, and then takes 2 half hour naps all day. I keep saying "I thought newborns sleep!?!?!"

my 12 week old DS just started sleeping thru the night about 1 to 2 weeks ago.
He does a 5 to 7 hr stretch, wakes for a feedin and back to sleep for 2 to 3 hrs twice.
Then he cycles between feeding, playing/cooing, sleep for 30 min to 1 hr and repeat.
Babies eventuallystart to establish their schedules, routines also help, ie., bathing, feeding, andknowing when he's tired so you can get him to nap.
ETA: when DS is goinh thru a growth spurt, he sleeps almost the entire day.

constant, it was an ongoing joke with my son ... "what is jack doing? oh, wait, we know - SLEEPING!"
I would say he slept 20 hours per day for the first 2-3 months. It was amazing, best vacation of my life  and he continued to be the easiest baby ever. Even with a milk protein allergy, he was still a dream!

Enjoy it! DD NEVER slept. She would cat nap for like 20 minutes here and there.
It was maddening!
Everyone says- oh when they are newborns all they do is sleep- it's the best time to take them out, go places, they will just sleep.
Ummm- NOT for us!
She was up- and crying- more than she was asleep!
