I just bought a car and was willing to pay in cash, but it didn't make any difference in the price.

Just want to add. Get internet pricing from the dealers rather than going in. They will give you their lowest price that way.
I agree. Our car was listed for a lot less online than on the lot.
how do i do this?
You mean get a quote online through the manufacturers website?

Yup. Cash isn't as attractive since they make the most money by financing the car.
Put in for online quotes. I was the internet salesperson at our dealership and we offered the lowest "no haggle" price, and it was the lowest you could get.
I'd also go shopping for a car late in the month. The dealers have monthly sales goals as well as fees for keeping vehicles on the lot at the end of the month,s o they are most motivated to make the sale then.
I think this applies to a LOT of businesses. Buying at the end of the moth can get you a better deal since sales people and managers are pressing to make goals and they will often go the extra mile to make the sale

Thanks for all the info! Perhaps we should sign up to finance then just pay off the balance right away?
That's what we did with DH's car last month. It saved us like $2,000 I think taking their financing (make sure there is no penalty for early pay off), and paid in full the first month.

We did this with our last car. We didn't even bother talking about a cash deal, we just signed up for the financing, made sure there was no prepayment penalty, and paid in full when the first bill came. Got an excellent price on that car.
