Help me persuade DH to trade up to a bigger car...

We bought a new Accord 1.5 yrs ago and realize it's gonna be too small once we have the 2nd. It's already tight when we load up our groceries after a Costco trip...

My DH says it doesn't make financial sense to upgrade 'cus we would lose money in depreciating cost as our purchase is so recent. My argument is, if we trade up for a bigger CUV that's the same year, the other car will also be cheaper so we're breaking even.

He doesn't get it and argues that we don't know how well the CUV is treated so it's not a fair trade.

How can I persuade him to upgrade?!?

Your DH sounds like mine! He will drive his car into the ground before even thinking of a new car in order to get the most amount of money out of it (in fact, we never even owned a new car until our minivan which we purchased in 2010). So I have no advice for you except...

We drove an Accord with our two girls until the youngest one was almost three. They were also a "2 under 2" deal, so we traveled with a decent amount of gear at times. We never had any problems that whole time. We even drove down to NC twice! It's nice to have more space, but not necessary...especially if it's not going to make sense financially.

Re: Help me persuade DH to trade up to a bigger car...

Thanks, I actually need to buy a car of my own 'cus we live in the suburbs now. But I'm a new driver so need to get a cheap used car...

It just doesn't make sense for us to get 2 sedans 'cus we have a need for a bigger car. I want DH to upgrade so I can get a cheap sedan. He refuses to let me drive his new Accord... :(

How old is your other car? I agree with your DH about the depreciating asset issue, sorry. If you said this was year 4 I would say wait to year 5 and trade in. You are going to get the most money for it at 5 years/potential for repairs. Now if you maintain the car (tune up/oil changes/regular preventative maintenance) your car can last for a long time.

I like having a crossover. It is big enough for the four of us, but we can't have anyone else ride with us. There is just no room. When we got married DH only rode on the subway and borrowed his parent's car when he needed one. We had my Toyota Corolla (we still have it) and that was it. DH uses it to drive back and forth to work. I drive a CX-7. I like my car a lot. It works well for a family of 4. If your heart is set on a bigger car I would look for a certified used/pre- owned SUV or cross over. I found that driving a truck body was difficult for me and I prefer a car body.

Re: Help me persuade DH to trade up to a bigger car...

We only have 1 car now, the 2010 Accord.

DH has been pressuring me to get a 2nd car for myself but I don't want to buy another sedan as a 2nd car. It just doesn't make sense to have 2 sedans when we need at least one bigger car.

Bottom line is, he refuses to let me drive the Accord so we need to sell that to buy the used CUV/SUV and a used 2nd sedan...

I know it sounds kinda confusing but hope that clears it up.

Can you just get a used SUV?

I do agree that you should have one bigger car. I drive a sedan and DH drives a SUV. We always take DH's SUV whenever we go anywhere as a family. It is way too cramped in the sedan with 2 car seats.

I totally understand. I got my license in high school but didn't drive much. I did not drive for most of my 20's.

DH tried to make me take the SUV but I still don't feel very comfortable driving it. I'm also afraid of scratching it because DH is anal plus when it comes to cars.

A crossover drives a lot like a car, you're just a little higher up than a car (so if anything, you can see better etc).

I would look at a used crossover for you.

We actually traded in our 1 year old accord for a pilot when dd was 2 months old because it was really tight with the stroller diapers bags and groceries. Dh was against it while I was pg but once he saw how crowded it was and we knew we wanted more children he sort of gave in. I wanted a minivan but we settled on an suv. Maybe once your dh sees how tight it is he will change his mind

You should look into something like getting a new or used Subaru Outback. There is definitely more room in it but it's not a large car or high off the ground. It is a safe family car as well. I learned to drive on my dad's Subaru. Good luck

Thanks for all the suggestion/advice ladies, I'm gonna start a new thread for suggestions on good crossover/cuv/suv types of cars for a petite mom. :)
