Q about public school and zoning , maybe someone on here knows

If you are zoned for a certain PS do they "have to" take you even if you don't pre-register and you decide to wait till the last minute (when the registration starts in September) ?
Lets just say you pre-registered your child at a school you are not zoned for and did NOT pre-register at your zoned school thinking that this gives your child a better chance of getting into that non zoned school. But you are hoping that if your child does not get into the non zoned PS where you originally registered you can still go and register at the zoned school last minute and to your knowledge they are required to take her.
Does this sound right? Are public schools you are zoned for really required to take your child even if you decide to register last minute ?
I had a conversation with one of the parents about this at my DD's school and I'm just curious how it really works.

Thanks you

the answer is yes. your zoned school cannot turn you away no matter when you register.

except if you live within the 5 boros.

see this mother thought so too and so she did what I posted above, but then she went with her sister so they could pre register her nephew at their zoned school (they live in the same 2 family house and they are zoned for the school 2 blocks away from them) a woman in charge of applications in the school office told them that just bc you are zoned for a school it does NOT mean that they will take you in September -once the actual registration starts- if you don't pre-register now and the school principal confirmed it, so now this mom from DD's school feels like she has to register for this zoned school too even though she would rather not.

Where do you live? How old is your child? If you're on LI, yes, your zoned school has to take you. If you're in NYC, look on the website. They're always changing the rules.

I think it depends on where you live.

When we lived in Manhattan, it didn't matter if you were zoned for the school. If there was no space, you had to get bused to another school. It was a lottery system.

We currently live right outside of DC, in northern Virginia. You also can get potentially squeezed out of the school you are zoned for due to overcrowding. They also bus you to gifted center schools and there are magnet high schools that you need to test into.

I believe at a certain point, if the classes happen to all be full then the could send you to another school in the district. It would not be fair for them to suddenly be breaking up the classes when school already started because someone was waiting until the last minute. They preregister students so that they can be prepared. Kindergarten is not mandated, so that is a whole new ballgame.

In most districts they would have extra room for a child in the classroom because they try to provide smaller classes than is mandated. But in some areas with a larger class, yes I could see a student getting shut out. At least until arrangements can be made.
