We just got rid of ds#1 paci last month- he was 3 in August. We said the paci was broken and old and that was the end of it. He sleeps at night fine without it but the naps are becoming hit and miss.
I won't lie to you it is much harder for him to relax when he goes into bed at night now he is wired and jumping all over the place.
It was much better than we had expected and now we need to take it away from our ds#2 who I do not think is as attached to it.
Yeah, the paci is like baby Valium. The second it goes in his mouth, he's so relaxed and sleepy.

Re: Need BTDT Advice about taking away paci from a toddler (long).
DS #1 is 20 months and addicted to his paci for sleep now. I wanted to take it away before Ds #2 was born, alnong with the bottle. I opted to wait on both because I felt like he was going to have a lot of change. I got him used to falling asleep on his own, then he got a new borther. The next thing is moving him into a new room with a big boy bed, so I'm keeping the paci and bottle for now. Once he's settled in the new room and big boy bed I'll started taking thlose two away. He's still a baby and it was just a lot of transition for him.
Good luck...I do think when I do start to take away both it will have to be cold turkey.
