G6PD Deficency...anyone familiar with this?! Please come in...

I just found out that one of my 5 month old triplet boys has this deficiency, and now I am getting my other DS tested (the hemotologist said girls are just carriers and I do not have to get my DD tested until later on in life).

Anyways...does anyone know anyone or have a child that has this deficiency? It is all diet base, and very easy to control, however not many doctors are familiar with it because its not very predominant in the US. I was just trying to receive additional information and find out what foods I should be completely staying away from
(since I am pumping for him).

I'm not sure where you live... but I do know that NYPH Cornell/Columbia had MDs with a lot of experience with G6PD def. It's not really that uncommon.

There is a large pediatric hematology department and there may be a few physicians that specialize in G6PD def.

I agree with pp about NYPH, they have an incredible pediatric department.

Not sure of your ethnic background, but 2 of my cousin's sons have this. It is definitely diet related. He had a severe bout of anemia after eating fava beans, of all things. I think it differs in severity, since on child has more of a reaction than the other. It is easily controlled, and a good thing that you found it out early. Her son was over one before he was diagnosed!
