Starter Tripod
I really want to take my own family portraits and so i need a tripod. I don't have a ton of money to spend right now on a very expensive one, so can anyone recommend a good, sturdy & portable tripod for abut 50 bucks? I'll upgrade eventually, but with the holidays and two of my nieces and nephews birthdays coming up, i feel like I need something ASAP. Thanks for any recommendations!

Re: Starter Tripod
Basically, the rule of tripods is that you can get portbale, sturdy or cheap, but not all 3.
I have a benro travel angel. It folds down to 14 inches long and I bought it because I travel a lot.
If you just want something for family photos, which I assume will be for posed group portriats that include you, or else a tripod would be far less helpful than a flash. A tripod hold the camera steady as slow shutter speeds in low light, so it would be useless for action photos of children, etc.
If posed portaits including you are your goal and you are not traveling long distances, you dont need anything super fancy. Consider a gorilla pod you can attach to the back of a chair or something like this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/98268-REG/Slik_617_900_U9000_Tripod.html

Thanks for responding. It is for portraits--not action shots though I do want to invest in a good flash one of these days too.

Re: Starter Tripod
If you can afford more, this is probably one of the best tripods for under $150. its not super light, but its known to be an excellent tripod

I think this model is just the legs only - you'd need to spend quite a bit more to get a ball head or similar head to attach the camera to the legs.
My recommendation would be to check out B&H and Adorama for complete tripods in a range you're comfortable with or a little more then see if anyone is selling one on ebay or craigs list. You might find someone that wants to upgrade and is selling their current model.
ETA - be sure to check the ratings for weight load. I just looked at some of the tripods in your range and many were only rated to hold 2 - 4 lbs. A Canon Rebel with a zoom lens may be in the 2.5 - 3 lb range so make sure the tripod is sturdy enough to hold your equipment.
