another baby with reflux

So I think DD has reflux and we brought her to her ped yesterday. After explaining to the ped her symptoms, he also said that she probably has a small case of reflux. He suggested switching her formula to Enfamil Gentlease from Similac advanced and see how that goes.
He didn't recommend any meds for her because supposedly she's gaining weight so he doesn't feel like there's a need. He also said that a lot of babies have reflux since their digestive system is still maturing. Unless she's not gaining weight, he's not going to put her on meds. She should grow out of it by 6-8 weeks and DD is currently 5 weeks old. She would spit up hours after feeding where milk is also coming out of her nose. She would be woken up in the middle of her sleep with her eyes wide open doing the gagging motion and only to find her spitting up minute later. Arches her back, cries during feeding sometimes.....etc, etc.
Does anyone have a reflux baby that's NOT on meds but with just a switch of formula is all better now?
I'm curious to see if I should just switch formula and see in two weeks or go get another ped's opinion.......
I'm not trying to give my DD meds if she doesn't need to but in the back of my head, I'm afraid that I'm neglecting this issue if she DOES in fact NEEDS meds.....

Don't give up yet and think she needs meds it might change in a couple of weeks. I am a week ahead of you so I can empathize. I would switch the formula to Gentlese as advised and wait 1 week to see if there is a difference. Also I use the Mylicon drops with the formula or just alone after a feeding sometimes this helps.

Shortly after a feeding I sometimes put her in a bouncy seat and turn on the vibration to sooth her so she can digest a bit

eta - I keep her upright for almost 1/2 to 45 minutes, I also put her fwd and rub her back during this. Don't know if your laying her flat to sleep but an incline also will help with sometimes the spitting up.

Hi...I'm sorry that your LO is suffering. My son has reflux too. We r trying different formulas and I was happy to hear your ped recommended gentlease since that is what we r trying now. We just started last night so not sure if it's working yet. I really hope that it does b/c I hate to see him miserable.

Re: another baby with reflux

If it was just spit up I would say no meds. That was DS #1 spit up CONSTANTLY. But never in pain.

Your DC Seems to be in pain so i say meds are necessary.

My ped said meds were necessary when the reflux starts interferring with the feedings. Meaning they stop taking full feedings because of the discomfort.

Both of my kids had reflux. My first was on meds but with the second, we just switched formula. We switched to Similac Sensitive for spit up in the ready to feed and it definitely helped.

Re: another baby with reflux

i don't understand. Your ped said she should grow out of it by 6-8 weeks? Chat Icon That is definitely misinformation right there. Some babies don't outgrow it for 3 months. Most it's 6 months and then there are those that don't outgrow it until much later (my son was 15 months when we could finally wean him off the meds- we tried 3 times prior to that and failed).

I would definitely do a little more research yourself before you decide anything as far as meds.

Your daughter has a few of the symptoms my son had and he HAD to be on meds because it hurt him so bad. Once he was on meds, he was a new baby... stopped arching his back, stopping screaming mid feeding, etc etc. Good luck! Chat Icon
