Riu- Costa Rica

Has anyone ever been to the Riu in Costa Rica? How was it? Did you have a direct flight?

Re: Riu- Costa Rica

I honeymooned in Costa Rica this past May.

If you're going to Guanacaste (where the RIU is) I would highly recommend looking at the more boutique style resorts in the Guancaste region.

The RIU gets good reviews on tripadvisor b/c they're very much americanized it's like staying at a Sandals. But if you're going all the way to Costa Rica, you really should experience what the country has to offer. We chose not to do all inclusive and are SO glad. We stayed in Playa Hermosa and would walk down the beach to different restaurants; walk to the popular local Gingers restaurant and took a cab into Coco. Another honeymooning couple we flew into Liberia; and back to NYC with stayed at the RIU and they said after the 2nd day they were tired of the food.

We ate locally for every meal and can't ever say we had a bad meal! And the food is soooo reasonable! beer is $1.25; mixed drinks $3-$4!

and aside from the food; you want to be able to take advantage of the nature; the wildlife; it's truly a beautiful country.

ETA: one night we went on a sunset cruise and were chatting with the staff on board as they were showing us all the nearby areas and they did point out the RIU to us; but even they commented on how secluded it is; and that you don't get to experience the country with out paying $$$$ for day tours. We have friends that honeymooned there and never left the resort. Costa Rica in my opinion is not a destination to go to and just stay at the resort all day. You miss out on SO much!
