Insurance denying my hospital stay?
I received a letter in the mail from Empire saying that they are denying my stay in the hospital overnight.
They said my surgery was supposed to be ambulatory, I was stable, and I should have gone home that night.
However......
my surgeon was running behind that day. my 3:45 surgery ended up being at 5:30 and my surgery, which was supposed to only take 2 hours, ended up being 5 hours long...(they ran into a bigger tumor than they ever expected).
By the time I woke up and with it in recovery, it was around midnight, I think. The nurse told me I had to stay, that I had a drain pouch put in and should be monitored especially since it was so late. I told her I wanted to go home, but she fought me on it and said the doctor wanted me to stay.
I will fight this, but wondering if anyone had any experience? It sounded like I should have stayed....so why did they deny it? I guess the doc didn't put down enough info. Will this be easy to fight you think?

I'd let the doc and the ins company duke it out. I wouldnt worry at this point.

Exactly what I was going to say.
My insurance company denied me the big important sono when I was preggers.......I think it is at 20 weeks.
Both myself and the doctor wrote a letter advocating the importance and the situation was fixed.

Ditto
Inform your doc, and let them know that they need to fight it and inform the company that it was medically necessary.
One time I had an ER visit that the insurance tried to say wouldn't be covered, but I had called my doc before going and they told me to go. The doc wound up fighting it and I never heard from the insurance about it again.

Re: Insurance denying my hospital stay?
eek! of course you had to stay, they couldn't make you go home like that!
mine was ambulatory but you bet your bottom dollar I stayed until I felt ready to leave (and even then it was pushing it) and my surgery was at 8am. I can't imagine having gone home that late at night, that soon after the surgery was complete.
they'll sort it out, i'm sure it's just that he needs to provide more detailed info. good luck!

Re: Insurance denying my hospital stay?
thanks all!
I never have issues with this insurance; they seem to always cover everything -- so I was surprised, to say the least.
I will def. bring it up to the doc.
