Of all the things to concentrate on....baby book related
So our shower was on Saturday. It was PERFECT. We had a beautiful day with family and friends. Shandon Court in E.I. did a fantastic job.
Anyway, I began filling out the baby books that I got and there is a family tree page. I get to the great-grandparents side for me. And it gives me pause.
My dad's father took off with his mistress when I was two. We didn't hear from him again until I was 10 (he visited here when I was 13, the one and only time I remember seeing him). He comes in and out of my dad and his siblings' lives, picks and chooses who he talks to at any given time, and disappears again. This man has never been a grandparent to me. I wouldn't know him if I tripped over him. That being said I was VERY close with my grandfather on my mom's side, who passed away when I was 17. So I had one awesome grandfather growing up. I am very close with both grandmothers.
I don't want my dad's father included. To me, he doesn't exist. DH said it's up to me. My mom says I should still put him in because technically he will be my son's great-grandfather by blood and we can just say, "We don't talk about him."
If you were in my situation, would you include his name?

Yes, because in 30 years when you hand the book over they'll be long gone and your DC will want the blanks filled in.

That's a good point. I hate that there are blanks in my baby book. I'm trying so hard to fill up DD's as much as I can (I purposefully bought a book that only goes for one year so I'll have more of a chance of finishing it).
You could even put a small note next to the absentee grandfather like "never talked to" or "ran off years ago" right under his name in tiny print so the story is there.

My father was not in the picture either, but my mom put him in something similar. It was awkward to know he wasn't a part of the family, but I know where i come from...

ITA. My dad's parents are terrible people and were basically MIA for my whole life. But I know nothing about their history, and I feel like half of my family tree is missing.
Fill it in but tell your DC the story when they're old enough to understand.

Thanks ladies! Thinking about it, I would want to know where I came from. He doesn't need to know about the situation until he's older.
