DS is getting his first vaccine today...any tips? * UPDATE*
I'm a nervous wreck, DS is 8 weeks today and is getting the Dtap vaccine later today, I'm so nervous about hoe he will react to it. Help calm my nerves BTDT moms, how can I soothe him if he is in pain. How long will he be irritable? How high of a fever should I expect? I'm such a mess about him possibly not feeling well but he needs his shots
UPDATE:
DS was so great, he didnt even cry when he got the shot, not a peep. The dr. kinda chuckled and said how strong and tough he is He had the shot yesterday afternoon at 4pm, so far the only side effect is that he slept through the night hope he won't develop a fever.
Thanks for ur replies ladies

Re: DS is getting his first vaccine today...any tips?
DS started crying when he got his but it only lasted a few seconds. i gave him his pacifier, held him to me, and made shushing noises and that calmed him down. he didn't run a fever with any of his vaccines (knock on wood) he was fine the day of, and always got more irritable the day after. he also slept a lot for the next three days. (he usually refuses naps, but after he would sleep all day and wake up only yo eat)
it's a lot harder on you than it is on him. he won't remember a thing about it so it's just a momentary discomfort.
good luck and stay strong!

Im the same way with shots. I hate them. My DD reacts awfully to them though so thats why. Just keep an eye on him. He may not have any reaction at all. Its usaully a low grade fever if any treatable with tylenol and the crankiness lasts maybe a day!! Hang in there!!!! I think it hurts us mommys more than them!

My DD had no reaction to those shots. She screamed like her throat was being cut when they gave it to her- but that lasted all of 10 seconds. She passed out on the way home and slept better than ever that day!
No fever, no irritability, nothing.
But you can give tylenol in case of a fever or anything.
I know it's scary the first time they get shots- but he will be fine!
ETA- the Dr will give you a sheet with what to expect- how high a fever is normal, etc.

Re: DS is getting his first vaccine today...any tips?
My DD reacts terrible to getting shots. My boys weren't so bad. She gets a low fever and you can't touch her legs AT ALL. It's so horrible! She just cries and cries. It also makes her sleep horrible at night too. She just got another set of shots about 1.5 weeks ago. Thank goodness at her 9 month appt. she doesn't get any. She just had her 6 month appt. When they first get the shots all kids cry somewhat and than they stop fairly quickly. My DD was fine the first 1-2 hours after getting the shots, but after that is when her legs hurt really bad. Good luck!

Re: DS is getting his first vaccine today...any tips?
Make sure to have Tylenol handy. And don't be alarmed if he sleeps all day or a lot more than usual. This is typical with the first ever vaccine.
The DTAP can cause some pain at the injection site, so he might be irritable. Both my DC's had the same reaction..hardness and redness at the injection site with this vaccine. Your ped will tell you what to look out for.
Don't worry, it's harder on us than it is for them.
