Another Gender spinoff sortof - Chaz Bono
I saw him/her on Oprah the other day and I couldn't help but think about Cher and what she must be going through with this whole transformation. She gave birth to a little girl who is now a man. The whole thing is surreal to me. I am happy that Chaz is happy and feels like the person he was meant to be - but like Oprah said, it's like Cher had to mourn the loss of her daughter.
This is so far from the realm of my norm but you can't help but wonder what parents go through when faced with this.

I can only hope that if I were ever faced with this type of situation that I would handle it with acceptance and grace. It's so easy to say what you "would" do or how you "would" react... but I can imagine that when placed into the actual situation, emotions must run high.
I would think as a parent, no matter how accepting you think you are, you probably go through all the stages of grief...denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. It's hard to even imagine being in that situation. I can only pray that my children grow up to be happy and healthy and whatever path their lives lead them I can have the fortitude to accept.

Re: Another Gender spinoff sortof - Chaz Bono
It isn't like Chaz woke up one morning and said, I think I'll be a boy today. He has been living as a boy almost all his life (at least all his adult life). Cher had a VERY long time to get used to the idea that her once daughter had an identity issue and wanted to be a boy. I would think, if presented with the same situation, that my child would come to me and talk to me about their feelings. I would like to think that I will accept whatever they decide as I love them for them and would only want them to be happy.

to be perfectly honest, i would have a hard time with it. I gave birth to a girl, her dad knew she was a girl and i need her to be a girl. i would still love her no matter what, but i would be confused just as much as she would.

I would accept my child no matter what... but DH and I were just talking about this the other day. I would be so so so upset and worried about how others would react to this if it was my child.

I feel the same. It's the everyday people and comments that would break my heart and want to knock someone out.

I see what you are saying. I do think that if anyone is ingrained so deeply with that community it is Cher, so maybe she has a better understanding of what Chaz is going through.
I think that for me, as a mother, I would do anything to make sure my children live up to their own potential.
