animal in attic

I'm pretty sure we have a squirrel in our attic. During the day and at night we hear running around, scurrying, scratching noises from the attic. Has anyone had this problem before and if so how did you deal with it? i looked around the house and have no idea how its getting in Chat Icon DH wanted to take care of it himself but i am trying to convince him that is a very bad idea!!

Re: animal in attic

We have had problems with squirrels in our attic before. They even had babies in there! Chat Icon The first year we chased them out and for years after that they kept coming back. They were actually eating holes into the house to get in. We finally boarded up every possible point of entry and put a ton of moth balls up there, apparently they don't like them and it kills the "smell" that keeps them coming back. We have been squirrel free for a few years now. HTH

It could be raccoons. I had one that had babies and if you get the mother, it takes a while for babies to leave. Fun right?

Get an exterminator. If it's raccoons, they can ruin you insulation.

Re: animal in attic

thanks! i've heard it during the day so i didn't think racoons because they are nocturnal? but maybe they move around during the day?

i will try the moth balls and see if that helps, thanks!

I agree - regardless of what it is I'd call an exterminator - they can ruin the walls, insulation, etc.

Re: animal in attic

We had squirrels in our attic when I was still living at home, my dad found their entry way and blocked it off but they still kept clawing their way through it. He finally cut down the tree they were using to get up there and used some kind of steel instead of wood to patch up the hole and we never had a problem since.
