Carpet and/or Hardwood Floors
We are buying a 2 bed coop and there is carpet throughout the entire apartment (minus kitchen and baths). The carpet is fairly new and the thinner (burber?) kind but we are thinking either taking it all out and putting in hardwood (or something that looks like it), leaving the carpet, or putting hardwood just in the dining nook and entrance way (if this is even possible). We may leave the carpet in the bedrooms however. This would mean that there would be hardwood and carpet in the same room (living room, entrance way, and dining nook). We do have a baby on the way and I think the carpet would be better for her to crawl around on but the hardwood does look better. Plus the idea of carpet in the dining area is odd. Opinions welcome...this is our first place
If anyone has photos of hardwood and carpet in the same room please do share!!!

Re: Carpet and/or Hardwood Floors
Before you do anything, find out first what the co-op's rules are about covering the floor. In my co-op, 80% of the floors on the upper unit must be covered. I don't have to abide by this rule because I bout before it came into effect, but I don't want to hear my downstairs neighbor as much as she doesn't want to hear me. I kept some of the hardwood in the hallways, just cover some of it with a runner, and I recently put in a bound carpet in the master BR so that there is a 6 inch edge of hardwood around. My DR is carpeted because it flows into the LR.

Re: Carpet and/or Hardwood Floors
Make sure you know the rules at your co-op first, most required 80% carpet, especially if you are not on the first floor. I personally would do wood everywhere and get area rugs... I did this in my co-op (first floor, no restrictions) and in my home now too where we plan to have kids in the next year or so. There is a nice big area rug in the living room for crawling and playing. I babysat our friends 1 years old the last 2 days, she crawled on the carpet, wood and even the tile, nothing stopped her!

Re: Carpet and/or Hardwood Floors
The co-op is on the first floor (raised above ground level) and there are no board restrictions regarding carpet, at least not in the packages we read. We will have to ask before we do any work.
There is parque flooring under the carpet but I've never been a big fan. So we do have the option of just refinishing the floors instead of installing all new ones which would cut costs.

If there is only a crawlspace under your unit, carpeting may keep your apartment warmer. Even though I'm on the second floor, I noticed a change in temp once I put a carpet in the MBR.
Carpeting also absorbs noise, something to think about with a young child. Area rugs will too.
