Has anyone given birth in one or planning to???

I really want to, but my husband is too nervous about it.

Re: Birthing center

If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you? I would love to, but my husband is too nervous about it.

How do you go about giving birth there? I'm assuming you need to see a midwife?

Just curious how it works...Are they all next to or close to a hospital in case of an emergency?

Where are some of the top birthing centers in LI or Queens?

Thanks!

Re: Birthing center

I'm planning on giving birth at the birthing center in St Luke's Roosevelt hospital in Manhattan. The advantage there is if you need to go to regular L&D for whatever reason it's just one floor down. I like knowing that I can have the natural delivery I want, but also that if something should go wrong I have all the medical facilities right there. It might be worth a look if it's not too far to travel for you.

I'm using a regular ob/gyn who supports births there, but lots of people use midwives.

I couldn't because the closest one in the area was 4 hours away. I lived in Nashville at the time. I used midwives and was in very pro natural birth hospital (I wound up with a c-section, but I am confident that I needed one since the c-section rates with my midwives are some of the lowest in the country, but that is a whole nother story)

I am going to go for a v-bac for my next child, but unless it is at St. Lukes I don't think I can use a birthing center.

I am not sure about the birthing centers on Long Island since I am in Brooklyn, but most birthing centers are very close to hospitals.

My BFF had a natural childbirth at one, and it was such a peaceful experience. She had a very homey room, it was relaxed, they even had candles going. They have medical staff present besides Midwives (most midwives are very highly medically trained professionals, btw), and they have all the medical tools you would need as long as you don't want the epi or need a section.

I would have your husband meet with some midwives and discuss the pros and cons of birthing centers with them. I think once your DH sees that it isn't like giving birth in a cave he will feel better about the situation. I can't imagine not using midwives!

Re: Birthing center

I think the closest is the Brooklyn Birthing Center, on Ocean Ave. As far as I know, there are no free standing centers on LI.

I am going to check them out, there is an info session on May 22.

Good luck with your decision!

Re: Birthing center

I was considering it, but had to squash those plans because of a winter due date and my proximity to the closest center. There aren't any on LI and only a handful in the city. I went with a midwife and delivered in a hospital.
