Switching to gas

So I pretty much need to switch to gas - home heating oil is just ridiculously priced.

I call LIPA/Keyspan or whatever company they're going by these days and was asked for my address. After giving it to them they said that there are no gas lines in my street and that it would easily cost at least $1500 to have the lined run not only to my house but down the street.

What doesn't sound right to me is that there would still be communities that don't have the gas lines running down the street?

I'm in Levittown. So does anyone know if there's a web site that shows where gas lines are run? Does anyone know of any other way that I can find out where are the nearest gas lines?

I can understand that the gas lines may not have been run to my house, but to not even be down the street, that just seems odd.

TIA,
Bobby

Re: Switching to gas

You have to call them to find out. Thats really the only way.

In my neighborhood... there aren't gas lines on the street... and the closest gas lines are on the main road about 5 blocks away.

I had propane installed for cooking instead.

I just learned that not all streets have gas. I was shocked. A house we are looking at is oil and I mentioned that I would want to convert and the realtor said that there is gas on the street.

I just got off the phone w/ NatGrid and was told that the closest gas line is about 800 to 900 feet away.

The first 100 feet is free and after that it would cost me $72/ft to have the lines ran down my street. That's over $50k just for the lines.

Now if only I can convince my neighbors w/in 800 feet to go in on this w/ me.
