I was at BRU earlier this week and when I asked they said that they only take their own coupons and they cannot be expired. This was the Bay Shore store.

they do but you cant use it on any sale items. If you wanted to use it on a sales item they would charge you full price for the item minus the coupon

I honestly think it depends on the store. When I was at the Sayville BRU, and went to use it they 'said' it wouldn't scan  . So when I went to customer service, they said it is because they didn't have a BBB close to them, so it wasn't considered 'a competitor' 
But another person behind the counter was nice enough to dig through stuff and find a BRU coupon for me to use

yeah i'd have to agree that it depends on the store and the person ringing you up.
BRU totally sucks with honoring and returning their own stuff so be weary if you expect them to take a competitiors.

Let me ammend that.
IF the BRU store is close to a BBB store- like in Westbury, then you can.
The BRU in Bohemia does not take them since there is no BBB store near by.
