Coughing...what to do?

almost 2 months ago, Em had whooping cough and was on amoxocillan.

a few weeks ago, she was coughing badly again, so we went back to the doc, she had a throat infection. We finished the amoxocillan for THAT, march 31st.

she is STILL coughing. it's at its worst at night, when/if we give her milk in her bottle. we have stopped milk during the night (we give her water in a bottle, yes, slap my hand - she still gets a bottle at night-time or naptime).

there are times that she gets very upset with the water and we'll give in and give her milk to make her happy (during the night or early morning) & she winds up coughing badly (at times bad enough to FULLY wake up).

what on earth could this be? we never changed her 'bottle nipple level', so she's still on slow - so that's not it... i'm SO tired (i barely sleep as it is) & i just don't know what to do anymore. during the day - she coughs SOMETIMES, but nothing like at night...

do we go BACK to the doctor? there's no 'seal like sound' with the cough - it's like a 'chokey' cough if that makes sense... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Coughing...what to do?

are you running a humidifier? Maybe run it on high and maybe try a vicks plug in vaporizer, too.
(its called vicks soothing vapors)

call your pediatrician. We cut out milk and all dairy with those coughs. Since she had the whopping cough not too long ago, I wouldn't chance it being something light. Better to call than not

Re: Coughing...what to do?

Emmy has this as well and has been to the doc twice. It's post nasal drip and she is just very sensative to it and she coughs a lot. We have some cough meds w/codine from the ped, but I just give her some honey before bed. I also use the vicks humidifier for an hour before bed so it's moist but not to bad. I slather her with Vicks on her feet, back, and chest. It helps, but doesn't take it away. We also have some cough suppresent(?) we can give. Our doc doesn't like suppressing a cough, but in Emmy's case we need to. She is just so sensative to it and it bothers her.

ya know - i specifically asked the doctor about cutting out the milk and dairy with BOTH visits - the whooping cough and throat infection and was told nope both times, not to worry about dairy.

nic - good idea on the soothing vapors. i'll stop and grab that after work. we run the humidifier at night unless it's raining, and if it is, we leave the window open.

no swab - listened to her chest/back and asked both of us about her cough. it was seal/barking - without question. i didn't remember about the 100 days...

watching nicole's kids tonight after work - will call you tomorrow! (love you too!)

First - I had no idea she had whooping cough -Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that must have been horrible for you all Chat Icon.

- I used to have broncitis a lot when I was really young. The worst thing to drink for ME - was milk - I know that they say these days that it is okay - BUT for me - it would make me very phelmy and make my cough worse b/c it thickened my mucus. I would try to avoid milk for a few days and see if that helps.

I hope she feels better soonChat Icon
