Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

I had a discussion about it this morning. Do you feel like you went back to work after having your children because you wanted to or because you had to.

To answer my own question, I feel like my answer is split. I feel like its my time to get back to work now that my kids are both in school, I can start to contribute to getting the bills paid and saving for our future. I also feel like I would be doing something again for myself and the adult interaction would be great BUT in reality if I didn't need to work I probably wouldn't. Why add the extra stress of work to the family, household etc...

So I guess I would be going back to work because i had to and slightly because i wanted to......I guess its because im kind of nervous, excited, anxious of how it will be once I actually start working again.
you?

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

Well I had to for financial purposes, yes, but I also wanted to.
Being a SAHM is not for me by any stretch of the imagination.
I love my job, love my career, love my alone/adult time at work.
So for me it was a combo of both!

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

Both
I had to financially but I also wanted to. DD was a winter baby and I was going nuts being cooped in the house just the two of us. I NEEDED adult interaction. I am the type of person who NEEDS to work. Dont think I could be a SAHM even if we could afford it.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

More because I have to then because I want to. Although I do love the interaction with other adults I so wish I was able to spend time with DS during the week. 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours at night is NOT enough time. I'm trying to do something on the side so I can work part time in an office and focus on my kids and my side business. And that's once the side business starts making money enough so that I can become a part time worker. I struggle with having to work everyday. I HATE IT. More now then ever. I'm preggo and such an emotional mess. Chat Icon

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

With Alex... partly both. I wasn't ready at 10 weeks post-partum, but then again, she was a miserable little baby, so I needed it, to some degree, to maintain my sanity.

With Yael, I had a 6 month maternity leave, and she was such a good baby, so I really, REALLY enjoyed those 6 months. But, I love working too, it's a huge part of who I am, so I went back because I wanted to.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

I had to go back to work. We could survive on one salary but it would be too tight. Also, my job provides our health benefits at no cost for the entire family. Luckily, I love what I do and I have plenty of time off.

Both. I really enjoy my career, but would love to stay home with my son. I think working part-time would be the best of both worlds, but unfortunately it is not an option for me.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

For me it's both as well.
As some of you posted... I don't think I can be a SAHM. I like my adult interaction. Plus, I like that I make some money as well. I eventually want to go back to school to get out of business and do possibly speech or something in the school's. Just not a teacher.
Mason also gets sooo much at daycare that I couldn't give him. He gets so much stimulation and loves the activities. It's a good mix for the two of us.
Some days I wish I could work less hours, but it is what it is.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

I went back to work due to financial obligations. I thought I knew myself and always thought that I'd WANT to go back to work. Well, I am a different person after having my DDs, and now I daydream about winning the lottery so I can stay home full time with them. If that doesn't work out, then I look foward to retiring from my job when I hit 20 years in 2017. The girls will be in school full time then, but I am sure that I will be very involved.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

my answer is I HAD to go back to work to continue living the life I WANTED.

we could be eeking buy right now with me home, but grew up like that (well, below eeking by really) and I just cannot. never ever. it terrifies me. and I have no real "excuse" not to work, my MIL is home with my son, every day, free of charge and takes great care of him.

so I am at work b/c all things considered, it was the best choice for my family.

I went back to work because I want to. I feel fortunate to have the choice, however there is sometimes guilt surrounding my decision to return to work as well.

I could have written this word for word. But my son is 21 months, and still feel this way. I used to play the lotto scratch off tickets on maternity leave. Thinking that I was going to win and not have to go back to work. Chat Icon

Here too. We could scrape by on DH's salary alone, but my benefits and retirement are significantly better, and my job is more stable. I went to school forever (doctorate), and like what I do, but I do strongly feel that my reason for being here is to help and teach my son. Everything else is not as important.

And I won't say which is easier or more difficult, but the guilt that I feel as a FTWM is harder than anything else I have experienced. It is a constant battle of being torn between your job and job expectations, and doing what is best for your child. And ultimately, I don't know anyone who can do both those things perfectly, at once.

I had always planned on staying home, and then when this recession hit, we were too worried about DH's position.

I do love having my own money, and knowing that I contribute monetarily. I feel like DH can't say anything if I make a purchase, since I am contributing a sigficant amount of our household income. I could never live with being micromanaged at home.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

Split.

I don't have to work for us to survive, pay our bills etc.

I do have to work if we want a more comfortable life that includes a nice retirement, 529s, savings, extras in life, less pressure/worry, etc. This is the life I want/need. I grew up in a single parent household where things were always tight. I don't want that for my family. I need cushioning!

I like my position and the people I work with, my manager, the kid's daycare, etc so it works out well and gives a nice balance.

If we win the Powerball tonight will I still work? Yeah, but I would walk around the office fanning myself with 100 bills just to bust chops of the people I work with. Oh, and I would cut back my hours.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

A little bit of both. I love to work and do not think I could do the SAHM thing, but we could also do it for a bit and eek by, but I don't want to do that. I have plenty of time off, the health benefits are through me and I really enjoy my job.

With that being said, I sometimes am so frazzled and at a loss for times, that with three now and working full time, I would not mind at all being a SAHM for a year or two now with my littlest being a baby. It's probably the only time in my life I would be okay with staying home for a bit, but since I don't have a job that offers me that time off, I came back after 12 weeks.

I think I have very good balance for me right now, but there are days I dream of just staying home.

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

Kind of both. I got a promotion WHILE ON maternity leave which I worked my butt off for before DD was born. I had to go back for that reason...and I wanted to go back for that reason. Financially, we would be ok with just DH's salary, but I have much better insurance and my part time salary (I'm working 4 days a week now) gives us all the little extras and really adds to our savings.

I have to but I also want to!! I have always been very independent person and I could never imagine not working and contributing finacially. I also love my job and the people I work with which makes it easier. I havent gone back to working in the office yet, I start Monday I am happy and a little sad at the same time.
I think ideally i would love to work 3 days a week but i cant do that with my job!

I had to go back to work.
We need my income and health benefits

In my perfect world I would have been home a full year with both my children and then work part time

alas--this is not my life and i work full time and pay $2200/month in daycare

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

BEcause I had to . I would love to be able to stay home for the next 2 or 3 years, until my kids are a little older, but my position won't be held that long. I am a teacher and although I love my career and wouldn't want to give it up, I would like to be able to stay home for a few years then go back

I went back because I had to, for financial reasons. We depend on both paychecks.

I always knew I'd have to go back to work and thought I was fine with it. But the reality of being with my baby for 3 months and how wonderful it was to be there for him and experience everything with him hit me harder than I thought it would. I eased back to work when I went back after maternity leave, working 3 days a week for the first month, then 4 days a week for 2 months, then finally full time. I found that working 3 days/week, for me, was the PERFECT balance. I was able to get out of the house, have adult interaction, bring in $ for household expenses, but still have time to enjoy with DS. Right now, days off (weekends) are filled with chores and errands, I hardly ever do anything enjoyable with DS Chat Icon

Re: Q for mommies that went back to work after having their baby/babies

For me, being a working mom means I can be a better mom. I couldn't be a SAHM, I would lose my mind. I love DS, but I need adult interaction and I need goals to work towards.

It also allows me to live in the lifestyle I want to live in. We just got back from Hawaii (we took DS), we are doing an extension on our home. We are expecting DS #2 in June.

It just works for me. To each their own.

I had to. We could not afford for me to stay home. I actually make more than my DH so we def could not live without my salary.
