Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
We're not looking for a house yet, but I want to get familiar with the areas, so we can be ready when we do want to look.
I'm looking for a neighborhood that is residential, yet not too far from public transport since DH works in the city, and I also plan to. Less than an hour commute to midtown would be great.
I know there is always a trade off, but I'm wondering if any neighborhoods are sort of in the middle between residential and urban. I live in Forest Hills right now, and when we buy a house I think I would prefer more residential and less traffic on the streets.

Whitestone/Beechhurst, Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck.
Basically, North East Queens starting at Whitestone making your way out towards the island.

I second the Bayside/Bay Terrace area! I actually live in Forest Hills and work in Bay Terrace and I love the Bay Terrace area!!! Its true you probably won't get as much land but the area is a great feel and the houses look great!

Very expensive, with not a lot of property. I live in Bay Terrace a co-op.
Whitestone is nice, that's where I would look for a house.

Howard Beach!
ITA! My DH grew up on the 'old side' and we lived there together for a few years. I loved it there and wished we had the money to buy there.

I live in Fresh Meadows, its very quiet but still close to the LIE and the express buses to Manhattan. I have a two family detached on a 40 by 100 lot.
I grew up and lived most of my life in Astoria, its a great town with lots to do but small backyards if any and all attached homes. But I still miss leaving my house and walking everywhere :)

Re: Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
I grew up, well til I was 14, in Floral Park (Queens side) aka Little Neck. I lived in a little private neighborhood off of Marcus Ave called Royal Ranch, and across from the golf course of North Shore Towers. When I was a kid-- it was great (my dad also grew up in the house), lots of neighborhood kids, block parties, etc. It was a small little residential community, with a private pool, etc. District 26 schools.
I am not sure what it's like now-- there was an article in the NYT a a year or so ago about how it has changed over the years-- but, lots of cute houses, decent yards and very close to the city!

Re: Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
Howard Beach! That's where I grew up (new side) Actually even both my parents grew up there. Its a solid area, houses hold there value without a doubt, but def pricey. Normal lots I would say is a 40-50 x 100 but you can go bigger and smaller. My DH and I also bought there and lived after we got married (old side) and sold a few yrs ago bc we wanted Long Island. But its a great area, just can be expensive!
Let me know if you need more info! I can tell you a lot!

Re: Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
A little biased but Rockaway/Belle Harbor! I still live here (depending on where you work in the city its more than an hour commute on the A train or express bus) but THE BEACH!
There's no parking on the streets in Belle Harbor in the summer so a house with a driveway (or friends) is a must. but that makes it quiet and lovely.
Winter, blah.

Re: Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
Thanks everyone! DH and I don't need a ton of property. The main thing is being in a neighborhood without numbered streets and a ton of traffic (which tend to go hand in hand)

Howard beach has numbered streets however I would not say there is tons of traffic, esp in the residential part off of Cross Bay BLVD (weather its old nor new side)

Re: Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
We currently live in Whitestone. I grew up here and love it. Close to everything. Our house is a 2BR which is on the market. We are going to move out to the island. Never thought I would say that being a Queens girl! You can't go wrong with Whitestone. We just would like more property. Lots here tend to be 40x100 on average. Good luck to you!!!! Forgot to add $$$$$$

Another vote for Whitestone, born and raised. It is truly the best of both worlds--suburban/urban but you pay for that luxury
Someone mentioned FLoral Park MUCH more affordable. Nice area. Though I am not sure how convient it is to NYC.

Re: Queens people, does this type of neighborhood exist?
You cant go wrong on the Port Washington Line on the LIRR IMO!
I grew up in Auburndale (Flushing North) 26 min to NYC on LIRR and never a transfer in Jamaica =)
My block had such a community- block parties. Christmas Carols, pool parties! My best friends are all from that block that I still talk to today!
Great community. great shools, walk to shops!
Def recommend it!
