Storage question

We want to free up space in our basement. Right now, I have about 30 of those big Rubbermaid bins down there filled with photos, holiday decorations and other stuff.

We have a garage that we don't park the cars in. Is it safe to store those bins in the garage, or will the stuff on the bins get moldy? It's a dry garage, not sure if that matters.

Re: Storage question

We store a lot in our garage... holiday decorations, luggage, household cleaners... I'm not sure I would put photos or clothes there, though.

I don't know what we would do without our garage!

Re: Storage question

I have the same things for my storage and I put everything inside one of those giant ziplock bags and then put the bag inside the bins. Just as extra protection.

Re: Storage question

I think things like clothes, books, holiday decorations and the like would be fine in the garage. I would probably line the bins with a heavy duty garbage bag just to have an extra moisture barrier. I would be careful of things that cannot handle extreme temps like electronics.

My parents garage is filled with those huge bins (they dont like to get rid of things) and nothing has been ruined over the years. They have clothes, holiday decorations, some misc china, arts and crafts. The only thing Id be weary to store in them is photos.

Our garage is pretty dry, but I don't keep my photos there, just because you never know- it's colder and more humid, depending on the time of year.

The other stuff- holiday decorations and home decor, etc. I keep in rubbermaid bins and it's been fine.

Re: Storage question

I built a wood rack in the garage to store our totes -- no problem at all. Here is a link to a rack that stores 32 oz bins in case you don't want to build anything. You can also just stack them, but it's hard to get at the ones on the bottom when stacked.

Re: Storage question

I wouldn't store the photos in the garage, though. Temp extremes, and humidity extremes may damage them. Everything else should be fine. Even when kept indoors, photos can get damaged over time.
