Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
How long after you deliver are you kept in labor & delivery? do they bring you to a room in the maternity ward right away? Also if you have a c-section are you in L&D longer?
I dont know if every hospital is different but i am delivering at Stonybrook.
Part of the reason i ask is that according to Stonybrooks website - the only person allowed in L&D is DH and that visitors are allowed in maternity from 2-8
so if i went into labor overnight - there would be no point in having the grandparents come up since they wont be allowed in L&D and visiting inthe maternity ward isnt until 2pm?
Im wondering if they arernt really strict with the visiting rules but im kinda hoping they are b/c i would like to have some time with just DH and LO and not have visitors until the next day.
** Also is Stonybrook strict with the 2 person visitor rule - or do they let multiple people in at a time??

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
I delivered at Good Sam. I was in the room once I gave birth for about 2 hours after. Seemed like 10 minutes. DD was born at 729 pm and I was brought to my room about 930-10 or so. DH stayed until midnight or so then left. After I gave birth my parents and mil came in and my sister and dh were in there already. As for visiting hours, they weren't strict at all.
But when we have gone to visit people at SB, they were on the stricter side.

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
I was in L&D for a while because I was in labor for a while LOL
From noon until around 3am I was in L&D. At that point I was moved to OR for c-section.
I was in recovery from 4am-7am when a room opened up.
I think visitors were allowed 1pm-8pm. I don't remember how strict they were. I was in Huntington Hospital.
But we specifically told family not to come to the hospital until after they received a phone call from DH. I didn't need a million people pacing around the waiting room for me to push out a baby.

Just had this conversation with a friend this week From my understanding stony brook is very strict in L&D b/c you are the same floor as the nicu, so they only allow SO & one other person. (DBJ808 actually told me this, you can FM her)

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
I delivered at NSUH-had a C-section..
I was in recovery for over 5 hours They did let in our parents to the recovery room (around 9pm) but they left by 10. I didn't get admitted to a room until 2am (the epi was taking FOREVER to wear off)
Maybe call the hospital and ask?

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
i delivered at sb - it was 16 months ago not sure if they got stricter. as far as having 1 person in l&d not true. I was induced on thursday morning but delivered ds friday at 5pm. I had dh with me. my mother and sister came around 1pm on friday. I knew they were coming and told the nurses before hand they were just stopping by b4 heading to my home (explained they lived far away) when my sister and mother came the nurses asked me if they were allowed to come in - i said yes.. when the dr checked me to see if i was fully dialated they went outside. when i was fully dialated the nurses asked me if i wanted them in the room or not. I originally did not want them there but then decided i did. they winded up staying in the room with me and dh until ds was born. they left about 15 min after ds was born and went home.
i was sent to my room about an hr and a half after ds was born..
i thought the nurses there were awesome. bc my family lives far they came at visiting hours - whenever that was
I think if u ask them to have people there then they allow people to come in.. If u dont ask then they adhere to the rules. hth

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
My friend just delivered at SB 3 weeks ago. She said that DH and her mom were with her in l & D and she specifically told the nurses to make sure nobody else came because apparently anyone can go in. She said that once she told the nurses her wishes, they were very good at keeping everyone out and sending them back downstairs.

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
i was in labor all night (got to SB@ at 10:30pm, had DS around 10:30am) and my parents came up to the hospital around 6am... my mom and dad sat with us in my L&D room for about an hour, no questions asked.
As soon as I delivered him, i was up going to the bathroom, washing my face, etc (I had no epi, so there was no waiting to un-numb).... the postpartum (maternity) rooms were all full, so I had to wait an hour. That hour flew though - they brought me a cheeseburger and fries, my parents were allowed in L&D room to stay with us, etc.
They're very very nice - as long as you're not in the way or being disruptive, I dont think they really care who visits you. I even had guests stay way past 8pm in maternity - i WISH they had been kicked out, bc i was exhausted!

Did they limit the visitors to just 2 people at a time? I know thats the rule but it seems like most hospitals just dont enforce it

This is true! I just delivered there 5 months ago and they were INSANELY strict. I was only allowed DH and 1 other person on the delivery floor. The actually gave them both a bracelet which they needed to show the front desk of L&D to get through. My sister tried to get through to see me and they made her leave. I was in L&D from 12am to 4 pm and my poor family was downstairs in the lobby waiting the whole time without being able to see me.
I would suggest not having anyone up until you can and want to see them. It is a long waiting process!!! Once DC is born, you get 1 hour with him/her. Then they take the baby away for about 2 hours to clean them up and do all of the fun medical stuff. During that time, you are in recovery being stitched, cleaned, and waiting for your room to be ready. So that is 2 hours you are away from baby and another 2 hours after delivery that no one by bracelet people can see you. Once your room is ready you go up and they bring the baby to you there. Unfortunately for me, my room wasn't ready for 3 hours so I had to wait even longer (not happy about that).
So this is the thing... you finally have this baby! You get to be with it for 1-2 hours then they take it away for 2 hours maybe a little more. When you FINALLY get that baby back in your arms and you are feeling better and the baby is feeling better and you are both relaxed and alone THAT is when people can come and that is when you don't want anyone there. My poor family waited for almost 18 hours in a hospital lobby to see me and meet the baby. All I wanted to do was be alone with my family, bond, and rest! I didn't really have a choice though! DS had a really hard time latching and never really was able to. I really think it was because we didn't get that bonding time when he was first born. I am a private person and didn't want to bf in front of everyone. So that whole first day was a wash with people coming in and out. Everything was so hectic! Obviously, what works for one might not work for others. Just figured I would give you my experience. Either way, make sure you raise hell if your room is not ready within 2 hours! Even that is too long! Once they are done cleaning you up you should be taken to your room. It is totally unacceptable how slow they moved! The only thing preventing me from seeing my child was a room that wasn't ready! I was so mad!
***Once you are in maternity, they are as strict or laid back as you wish. If it is not visiting hours they will ask you first. They have a guard calling up each time someone comes to see if it is okay. However, no one is allowed up to maternity until you are transferred there. I loved that! I didn't want anyone meeting or seeing the baby until I was there. I wanted to experience everyone meeting him for the first time. I liked that they did that!

Re: Question about L&D / Maternity ward and also visiting rules
I delivered DS at Stony Brook at 10:37pm via C-section.
I didn't go to a privaste room until about 2am, they were monitoring me in recovery. DH was with me until they took me to recovery and I saw the baby there. DH could've stayed but I preferred he go home and get some real rest rather than stay with me in my room. The next day DH came back with my MIL and they let her uop before general visiting hours. My parents and the rest of the family came during visiting hours and there wasn't a real limit on # of people...at least none that I noticed. at one point I had 6 people in my room.
I had a great expereieince there and will be delivering my next DC there!

The visiting hour rules are not the same in L&D as they are in postpartum.
