i do have advice on filling holes and cracks.... use steel wool to fill the holes, that works for bugs and mice as well...

its totally normal for apt blds to have bugs... id be more surprised if you didnt see them ever...

We have lived in Queens for 5 months and so far have only seen 1 bug...I think it was a water bug. We put combat discs out and change them every 6 weeks. We also have a cat, and that helps with both mice and bugs (he likes to eat bugs Chat Icon ). You said no pets, but does that include cats, or just dogs? If you have one and they are allowed, it can't hurt to have the smell of a cat in your apt. It keeps vermin away.

Re: NYC people, I'm so upset. I need opinions.

if they were super big.. then it wasn't a typical roach- it was a water bug which is more like a palmetto bug.

Yes it is absolutely normal in NYC for these to turn up from time-to-time. When I lived in Astoria I lived in a very clean building and I would say at least 1x a month one of these monsters would show up..

it really has nothing to do w/ being super clean- and NYC has a ton of bugs and you're going to get them whether you are perfectly clean or not..
That's city living.

By the way- is this it?

I live in the City. Occassionally when one of our neighbors does construction we will see a roachChat Icon We usually just kill it and they don't come back.

I would suggest covering up the drains while you are not there. They do come up from the drain sometimes.

I'm practically gagging now which is pretty bad for me considering I'm a total nature girl.

yes they are common in city apts, they are called waterbugs. The exterminator should do the job.

We have never had them in our building (so far) but I have a friend who lives on Park ave, in one of those VERY high end buildings. They have a very clean $2M apt , the building has an exterminator and my friend has a housekeeper who cleans for her 3 x a week, but they get water bugs once in a while,, they look like huge roaches.
They have 2 kids and hate using chemicals, but they have to, they tried "natural" stuff-whatever that means- but it didn't work.... once the exterminator comes they don't see anything for a while, I just asked her and she said last time they saw one of the bugs was over a year ago.
She says you have to cover all the holes in the apt, even shower drains when you are not using them.

I grew up in a huge apartment building in Brooklyn.

Roaches were totally normal, no matter how clean you are. You can certainly minimize their appearance, but you can't make them all go away. It's a fact of life in the City. Sorry.
