Jumping in head first

We are SOOO confused on what to do with our housing situation. The townhouse we are currently living in is just not for us anymore for a variety of reasons. We have to sell it and get something to better suit our family. We will make $0 on the house, have to pay out of pocket for fees and then have no place to live. But we feel like this is our only option right now Chat Icon
We met with the agent last night and then had a talk with our IL's and I am so much more upset and stressed out today, I feel like I am going to burst into tears any minute.

I just want to know I am doing the right thing by leaving my family broke and homeless. I want it to be better in the future, but I don't have a crystal ball Chat Icon Chat Icon

Maybe I missed what isn't right with your house, but honestly I would stay put. I feel as if you should just deal with it for now and wait a few years. You never know what could happen in a year or so and something might happen where you'll be able to sell your home and afford another one.

Re: Jumping in head first

What would your living situation be if you sold your house? Would it be renting a smaller place than you already have? Or living with relatives? Or are you going to buy the house of your dreams? Or rent a larger space you'll be happier in?

If your living conditions aren't going to improve than I would consider staying put.

What exactly isn't working for you? If you can afford to stay, I would stick it out for a little bit, things may turn around like Mici said and you can be in a better position to sell in the near future...

Re: Jumping in head first

Why would you leave a house that you OWN under any circumstances? I'm sorry.. I just don't see what the reasoning is behind it, so that's why it doesn't make sense to me.. is that that you can't afford living there? Chat Icon

that is a good idea too...can you rent while you stay with your inlaws? maybe that would give you a way to save up for a downpayment? or so that you have $$ left over after selling?

Re: Jumping in head first

I'm sorry :(

Could you rent it out? If so, I would rent it out in the meantime, at least until the market is a bit better and then get something else.. in the meantime, you can live with your ILs and save money.. hopefully by then, the market can upswing and you can at least make something and use it towards your downpayment..

Have you had someone come and give you a number in terms of selling it? Just because it's not in an area you find suitable for you and your family, it may be for someone else. kwim?

Keep your head up.. this too shall pass.. Chat Icon

We have thought of this as an option. DH and I are not really landlord material, but we will do what it takes to make this work.

I don't really want to live with my IL's (that's a whole other thread Chat Icon), but it looks like our only choice to do this.
Four other homes are listed for the same price we want to list it at. We would make $0 and could not take a lower offer. I have a feeling that the other ones could go lower because I don't think they paid what we did when we bought.

Re: Jumping in head first

you could rent something if you just rented out your house or even if you decided to sell your house..

I'm all for wanting to save money, but a peace of mind goes a lot further...if you know there's going to be tension with your ILs, I'd opt to do that even though it'll take you longer to build that deposit up..

Re: Jumping in head first

With the extra details you posted, I would sell and get out.

You have small kids.

While it stinks, living with your inlaws will only be temporary and it would be something you would probably feel a lot better about in the long runChat Icon

that is also a good idea....if you can rent your house for more $ than you owe per month on your mortgage you might have enough left over to pay rent instead of living with your inlaws...that could work for a little bit...

It sounds like you're doing the right thing. Chat Icon Things might be tough for a little while, but I bet it will all work out in the end.
