Toddlers saying "I'm sorry" and not really meaning it???

Ok, so DS knows to say "I'm sorry" when he does something wrong.

So last night, he is in the booster seat feeding the dog. I am correctly the dog and then catch him doing and and tell him no and not too, so he says (adorable) "I sorry"...I say its ok, but don't do it again and proceed to bring the dog into the kitchen with me. 30 seconds later, repeat....same thing, "I sorry".

This isn't just feeding the dog, he'll do this when he head butts me sometimes....

Anyway to stop it or teach more of what "I'm sorry" means?

Just keep doing what you are doing. He is learning that when he does something "wrong", to say he is sorry. He will figure out how to differentiate between when he NEEDS to apologize vs when he doesnt.

Well my DD is 2 now and at this point she gets the whole saying sorry and then not repeating the behavior but I think it takes time and age to get to that point. As she got older we started with time outs and she HATES being in a time out. She's okay for the first minute, then is tortured the second minute but when she gets up she apologizes, gives a hug and kiss, then goes off to play and NEVER once has she gone back and done again what got her in the time out in the first place. She's very sincere about it. Sometimes she catches herself first now too.........for example, she hits the dog and quickly will apologize, hug her, and then not do it again. So she understands being sorry for a behavior.

Just keep encouraging him to say sorry when he does something wrong and eventually it will click. Right now he's little so it's not surprising he goes right back and does it again, my DD was the same way.
