Does it make a difference if I rekey a lock or change the whole thing?

I just bought a new house and I need to change the locks. The locksmiths say they can rekey the locks, as opposed to actually changing it. Is that ok? Is it just as safe to rekey as change the locks?

Good question, I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't changed anything yet b/c we are getting work done and the workers have keys to my house.
I hope we get replys.

Do you mean re-keying (changing the core on the lock et) versus completely removing and replacing the entire lock?

If so, there is no reason to completely change the entire lock set, assuming it is function. You just need to re-key.

Unless there is something wrong with the lock (you want a more safe one) I think you can just get it rekeyed.

When we moved iinto our house we had all the locks rekeyed. We saved a bunch of money this way, we have several outside doors. Plus. I like only having only 1 key that opens everything, top and bottom locks.

We just put new locks in. It was really cheap, like $20 or $30 for the lock and deadbolt. (we do have the same key for both)
