Harrison, NY

Would anyone like to share information on the area? The good, the bad, the ugly lol.

Honesty is appreciated on everything from housing, area, population, etc.

Ooh ok. Then that may not be an area to look into!

They are having a teacher fair in feb. and I figured it may be worth a shot to see if I got a job, but if its expensive I doubt it would make sense.

Re: Harrison, NY

My cousin lives in the area (monroe). While her house was expensive I dont think the whole area is expensive. Her house is quite large on 4 acres, But we pass alot of moderate to smaller homes when we are driving through town to get to her home.

THey have been there 4 years and love it!

I wouldn't rule it out. While Westchester county isn't a bargain, there are less expensive areas you could live in & have a short commute to Harrision.
Also, my guess would be that a position there would pay decently.

I think you are thinking of Harriman. Harrison is in Westchester county, near Purchase & White Plains.

DH's boss lives there. Gorgeous but pricey. If you could afford it then go for it. He has three little kids and he says it's a great place to raise them.

I love that whole area -- I would totally buy a house up there but the taxes are high.

You should definately go to the fair. Teachers in Westchester are paid very well -- neighboring areas include Mamorneck, New Rochelle, Armonk, RyeBrook, Portchester, Larchmont

Re: Harrison, NY

Thank you all for the information.

I sent my application and if I get called to interview we will take it from there. The only way we would move there is if I got a job then we would really investigate.

On another note, how is the commute to the city from that area? DH is an accountant and his job is on Long Island now, but I am assuming he would need to go to Manhattan for a decent job?

My DH works in Purchase, which is near Harrison. He used to live in Manhattan and take the train to White Plains, where he kept his car. It was a short drive from there. WP is about 35-40 minutes on Metro North. Depending on where you end up living, the Metro North New Haven line would also be an option.

There are probably decent accounting jobs in White Plains, as well as CT, which isn't far from there.

the commute into Manhattan is great. DH takes an express which is 38 mins into Grand Central.

BUT, there is really so much job opportunity up here. Within 15 mins or less of where I live, you have Pepsi, MasterCard, and GE alone... White Plains, Stamford, Purchase and Greenwich all have lots of companies and work opportunities. I personally don;t think there is a reason to commute to the city to have a great job.

Re: Harrison, NY

That's my hometown- well, the Purchase end of Harrison. It's pretty much as everyone has said, beautiful area, awesome school district, cute downtown area/own train station, $$$ houses and high taxes, small community feel.
