Sitter's mom passed away, what to send/do?

i'm home sick today (haven't slept all night, actually. yaaay), and I just got the call that our sitter's Mom passed away.

I'm lucky in that i haven't had to deal with much death in my family, so I'm not sure what would be most helpful for her right now. From what I understand, arrangements were all done in advance, and the service will be Thurs/burial Fri.

She's watching Logan tomorrow, she said she'll be home with her granddaughter anyway and it'll help keep her occupied.

She's an incredible woman and I'd like to help any way I can. They're Greek, if that helps.

Any suggestions?

My first thought would be food so she doesn't have to worry about cooking. How sad Chat Icon

Agree....I think food is a funeral item for some reason. Also a deepest sympathy card.

I agree with the food idea.
When my mom passed, people sent GCs and trays of food. I didn't have to worry about cooking for a while. It was honestly the last thing on my mind.

Sorry for the loss.Chat Icon

Are they Catholic? I usually bring a Mass Card when I go to a wake. I keep a few at home but I think you can get it in the Funeral Home as well.
I also agree about the food. Maybe a simple, one-dish supper so they don't have to worry about cooking and they just have to heat it up

Make a lasagna or send an edible arrangement for after the service.

I think a bunch of us are sending food there on Thurs or Fri. I am waiting to hear from C when the wake is on Thurs.

Re: Sitter's mom passed away, what to send/do?

a few years ago when DH's uncle passed away suddenly, his aunts/uncles and DH & I went to shop rite and did a huge grocery shopping for them. this way his aunt wouldnt have to deal with groceries for a few weeks.

did your sitter live with her mom?

so i think food/fruit baskets are usually the norm; maybe there is a charity she liked you can donate in her name to.

I think food is a great idea. Also if she speaks Greek which I am sure she does, maybe writing something in Greek in the card as a personal touch.

* Zoi se sas = May life be granted to you (said to family members at the funeral).
* Syllypitiria = My condolences (said only at the funeral).
* O Theos na ton/tin synghoresi = May God forgive him/her (said to family members at the funeral and at memorial services).
* O Theos na ton/tin anapafsi = May God rest his/her soul (said to family members at the funeral and at memorial services).
* Zoi se mas = May life be granted to us (said amongst mourners and to family members at the funeral and at memorial services).
