baby shower question... when mom goes into labor early
what happens???
my friend was due the first week of january. she just emailed me that she's bored out of her mind at the hospital, because her water broke.
clearly, she won't be pregnant come her scheduled baby shower, next month.
what can i expect to happen? do people still have the party and just turn it into a "welcome home" party for the baby?
i'd like to be able to take her a token gift to the hospital and a gift when the baby comes home... so i'd like to plan as to what to buy/make for each event... tia

in a case like that -- I would just turn the shower to a "wecome baby" party. I guess it depends on what her family wants to do.

Re: baby shower question... when mom goes into labor early
My SIL had this issue. She was expecting twins and went into the hospital for mandatory bed rest and monitoring when she was just about 5 months pregnant.
Her mother and SIL and cousin planned a baby shower at the hospital (they coordinated with the hospital staff), but low and behold, she had an emergency c-sectio at 28 weeks and it happened to be the same weekend of her shower.
She went through with the shower at the hospital while her kids were in the NICU fighting for survival. They both survived and went home 4 months later. She was released from the hospital after the shower ended.

This happened to my SIL. She had an emergency C-Section about a month before her shower. So we ended up having a shower / welcome baby party when they came home.

Happened to my SIL too, she was having twins and her water broke around 5-6 months, she still had the shower since the babies were in the NICU for around 3 months...I would just wait to see what she wants to do.

Happened to my cousin. She had the baby early and her shower actually was scheduled for the day she left the hospital. She had a c-section and the baby was in NICU so she stopped by for a bit and all the ladies just kinda mixed and mingled.

yeah...
the only time i experienced it was with a very premature delivery... so the shower was actually pushed back a few mom and baby were in the hospital for about 2 months

Re: baby shower question... when mom goes into labor early
Given that she's going to be back & forth to the hospital for the next month, I would go for a welcome home baby when it comes closer to the anticipated discharge (maybe a couple of weeks)
For a "baby" gift, I would give her a gift certificate for a food place near the hospital & make something for her to heat up when she does come home, along with a knitted hat or something personal to wear the baby to wear there.
Back & forth to the NICU is draining & the last thing you think about is food.
One key present to give is the car seat. Knowing who got your car seat is a huge relief because you need it to take the baby home.
My son was born at 34 weeks. We changed him on a storage bin & slept in a borrowed bassinet until our furniture arrived, my mom brought clothes to the hospital. My SIL brought the car seat. He was released in one week (but was born at a great weight for a preemie). For a 32 weeker, I'd expect a longer hospital stay.
