convertable car seat question - big baby

DS is about 33" long, but only 8m

So he's stil rear facing, but the straps in the back, come from behind his shoulder blades, almost middle of his back. It seems terribly uncomfy. I asked DH to help me move the strap up, but after reading the manual 100 times, it says the straps are safest below the shoulders (rear facing).

The manual also says, the shoulder straps, cannot be moved up further, if rear facing. We have a Graco MyRide 65.

Something I'm missing, is it really okay for that shoulder strap to be coming from almost the middle of their back?

i would FM carseatsafety chris and see what he says, but i am almost positive he is going to say yes to your question. DD straps are well below her shoulders andwe can't move them up. he says the most be at or below shoulder level.
