Port Jeff Station I think is not as good of a school district and it's like a regular neighborhood.

Port Jeff is on the water and has a main street and a great small town feel. Great bars and restaurants to eat at, alot of the homes are older and have character.

They are very different

Re: Tell me about Port Jefferson

If you have the choice you want to move to Port Jefferson, not the PJ Station. The Port Jefferson School District is VERY good. The taxes in PJ are pretty low too. The town is adorable. The commute to the city would probably be about 1 1/2 hours which is defintely a draw back. But a bonus is that the Ferry is right in town going to CT.

First off, Port Jeff as a whole is pretty big..there is north side and the south side of 347...and it also expands east and west of 25.

And there is port jeff station, port jefferson, and port jeff village.

for starters, clear your head of any negatives of Port Jeff Station....there is nothing wrong with port jeff station, and the only "questionable" area would be perhaps one block around the train tracks heading north into the village. When I say questionable, it's fine to me, but of course others are ignorant (not directed to anyone here) and see a higher population of hispanic stores in business there, and want to run for the hills. Those people are silly. Port Jeff Station near the train tracks also has good eateries and businesses, including Tara's, and a lobster house......there is a new development being build near a bridge, which is nestled in port jeff station near the tracks, and there are new victorians...drive around, and you will see nothing wrong with the neighboring areas of the train tracks of ignorance, as I like to call them.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Port Jeff Station... the school district isn't bad at all..it's Comsewogue School District....I have teacher friends there, and they all have good to say...

St. Charles & Mather are right near by.

Now, the rest of Port Jeff Station is fine. May not be as cute as the village, but decent living. Many affordable homes, good neighborhoods, affordable taxes, etc.

As you head into the village, which takes only a few minutes from the train tracks area or from 25, it is very charming and pretty, right near the water and the ferries.. however, traffic can be a nightmare, specifically in the summer. So can noise. If you live in the village, certain areas can be very noisy. However, it is very charming.

To live in POrt Jeff Village, your taxes will be low, but you will pay an additional village tax. It's usually 500ish. Your home in Port Jeff village will likely be older and very charming, but may or may not lack a lot of room space and your property may be very small. It will be hard to find a house under 400ish in the village, and if you do, it will likely need much work. Property is hard to come by in the village.. most people don't move from there often, I have found. I have seen tons of houses in PJVillage and spoken with many real estate agents... you kind of give up room and property size in exchange for living in such a cute village.

Now, Port Jefferson is outside of the village and heading towards E. Setauket, Setauket, and Stony Brook, and also expands South. Nothing wrong with Port Jefferson at all.

To me, you can't go wrong with any of them.

I'd also look into Poquott, but it's not for everyone.

I hope this helps you.

fyi too...a small portion of PJS is a part of Middle Country SD. (South of Old Town Rd.) I attended Selden MS & Newfield HS and absolutely loved it.

Re: Tell me about Port Jefferson

ITA with the posters above. I am in Setauket, but on the PJS border. I always "heard" that PJS wasn't nice, but there is only one really small section that is not great imo. The rest is quite nice. The section north of 347/norwood ave is great, and so is the part near the golf course. just drive around and see for yourself.

The village is great bc the taxes are low, but you pay for it in price. and its really hilly. there are parts of Port Jefferson that go to 3 Village (off of Old Post/California ave) not sure if that is Port Jeff Village.

I'm right near Meaghan, and agree. Honestly, if you have the money, I would go to Port Jefferson instead of Port Jeff. Station. But we're right near PJS, and there's nothing wrong with it.

I live in Three Village (right near Port Jeff), and I'd look into that too. Though I wouldn't want to commute to the city from this area. I guess Ronkonkoma is the best train line.

I forgot you mentioned a commute on the LIRR - I would not want to commute from PJ to NYC, unless you are willing to drive to Ronkonkoma.

PJ is a cute town, the village is great. As a previous poster mentioned, the homes are mostly older and smaller lots since it is hilly, but the taxes are low...due to the LIPA plant, which you need to be careful about being close to those smoke stacks.

I must've grown up right by where you are now. My parent's house borders Setauket in PJS, right behind Heatherwood Golf Course. My three younger siblings and I all went to Comsewogue. (I know a bunch of LIFers from high school, and we all turned out ok Chat Icon )

Seriously though, both Port Jeff and Port Jeff Station are nice towns. Like PPs said, the area around the train isn't the prettiest, but it's not "bad." I'm biased, but I think the nicest part of town is behind Boyle Road elementary. MLSLI calls the neighborhood "Briarwood."

Port Jeff SD is a teeny school district; I think they have a graduating class of 90 or so. Overall, the reputation for academics is excellent.

Port Jeff Village is a lot of fun - great restaurants, some shopping, and two of the best ice cream places of all time. The homes in the Village area are beautiful but pricey. Other parts of PJ are a little more reasonable.

Comsewogue SD is comparatively bigger; I think there were about 250 in the class of '08. The school district is solid, though fewer students go on to 4-year colleges than in PJ.

Neither town is very diverse. If accessibility to NYC is important to you, pick a different part of Suffolk. It'll take 90 minutes if you take the Port Jeff line, and an over an hour out of Ronkonkama.

Good luck and FM me with any questions!!

I grew up in that area. I attended PJs schools from pre-k through high school. I loved growing up there. If it weren't so far from my job, maybe we would consider living there.

As far as the commute, it's a long train ride. My parents drive to the City most of the time when they go or to another train station. You also have to change trains in Huntington. It's also a difficult area to "get out of". It takes probably about 15 minutes to get to Nichols Road and onto highways w/o stop lights.

The village is insane in the summer. My family doesn't live in the village. We basically avoid it by driving on Belle Terre Road past Mather and St. Charles. Depending where you are, you don't have to drive through the center of town.

Port Jefferson recently started charging for parking, however, if you are a village resident you can park in a special lot or in all spaces for free. There are also private beaches that only residents can park at. (The main one is by the Country Club.) There is a Country Club overlooking Long Island Sound- in the "Harbor Hills" section.

Port Jefferson also extends east to Mount Sinai/Miller Place (I am uncertain of the boarders.) You will find larger and newer homes (with more land) as you move east and west of the village area. (By newer, I mean not building in the 1800s.) These parts are still part of the incorporated village and the school district. Belle Terre, a very tiny incorporated village, is also part of the PJ school district.

Port jeff from what I hear is a good area with great schools. Port Jeff station is not so good. Definitely different then Port Jefferson. I would avoid the port Jeff station areas.

I just moved to the exact area of PJS (right behind heatherwood) and I really like it.

we really wanted a colonial and good schools. we found exactly what we were looking for.

I was very anti PJ Station when we were looking because of the "station" in the name. but after looking there, I really liked it. you get the best of both worlds IMO because your not far from the water and the village, but your not in the heart of it to have to deal with the traffic. its also closer to 347 your only highway in the area and PJS is closer to the LIE if you need to go anywhere. your also 10 mins from the mall. I really love the area, much more then I ever thought I would!

If we would have found a house that we liked I would have bought in PJ village because PJ schools are better.

you should also consider setauket, stony brook, e. setauket. most of it falls in the 3 village SD which is great too!

Re: Tell me about Port Jefferson

I am in PJS which my development is actually considered Terryville and I love our neighborhood. We are close to Comsewogue HS and we have no problems. We have friends who are in Port Jefferson and while it is very nice they do not have a lot of property and pay the extra village tax. PJ and PJS are great areas and a lot of younger couples are moving into the area.
