When/How to take care of hostas
For those who undertake landscaping on there own, what do you do with your hostas now? I have no green thumb, so i need all the help I can get. Thanks

NOthing. Just wait until they get all brown and whatnot. Then you just cut them down to the ground. My Mom always tells me not to cut them too early. i don't know if it harms the plant or something.

NOTHING! That's the beauty of them. They usually "disappear" in the Winter.
If they get too big. Next Spring, dig them out, use a sharp nice and cut them in half. Voila... 2 hostas!!!!

You don't have to cut them down, but you can when they are brown if you don't want to look at them. They are pretty hard to kill.

You have me cracking up! Mine are half yellow already. Hoping that they will continue to get larger and fill in more ground. We bough babies this year and were told their diameter would get ridiculous in years to come. This was one of the only landscaping we did ourselves....figured it was dummy proof for black thumbs like us.

They will! They are a shade plant though, so as long as it not super sunny , they will come back bigger next year. I split mine 3 years ago & they are out of control again.

they will get bigger, I promise.
I have grown-up hostas and they are pretty lush! From what I know, they are very user-friendly for us black-thumbers!

you can buy bulbs and plant them quick and then have bigger and better flowers every year, too!! they have a lot of bulbs you can plant now for spring

evil things (sorry i just pulled out at least 75 plants) when they get too big your going to have to thin them out unless you want a very large plush plant. They spread those suckers!
just let them die out and if it bothers you (yellow rotted leaves) then cut them down but leave a little bit peaking from the ground. When you trim them down with the mower i find it stunts their growth the following year.

So if I will be cutting these to the ground myself, is it best to wait for the "first frost" as I read on the internet, or is it ok to do it now while the temp is still in the 50s. The leaves are turning yellow, though some are still green. I hear some people are getting it professionally trimmed to the ground now, so if the professionals are doing it, is it fair to assume that I can too? I am just worried that they won't grow back healthy or larger next year if I trim too early/late. Please advise thanks!

ok so here is a demo. This woman cuts them too the ground. My question still is when. I guess I'll just wait a bit longer until the leaves turn more yellow. I still have green leaves.
