Would you get a 3rd opinion? sorry, kinda long.

2 months ago I brought DS (then 9 months) to the pediatric eye doctor, Dr. Pinchoff. He said that DS was extremely farsighted in his left eye. but because of his age he wanted to wait 8 weeks and see if it got better.

while making the original appts i called Dr. Benjamin first, but it took longer to get an appt so I then called Pinchoff and got an earlier appt. I decided to keep Dr. Benjamin's appt and went a month after seeing Dr. Pinchoff...follow me so far? Chat Icon

When I got to Dr. Benjamin I told him I saw Dr. Pinchoff and he said DS is farsighted. His response was...."I know Barry and I agree with whatever his diagnosis is". Um...thats a second opinon?? He THEN examined DS and said he agrees. But Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So 8 weeks later we met with Dr. Strome (Dr. Pinchoff's partner) only because we needed a saturday appt. Dr. Strome said DS is still very much farsighted and needs glasses now. We met with the optometrist in Strome's office and he hardly had any selection for DS's age and it was $350 with transition lenses. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm literally passing out from the thought of having to replace $350 glasses on an infant every 4 months when he out grows them.

so my neighbor is an optometrist but doesnt carry infant lenses and gave me the name of another guy. he was also questioning whether DS really needs them so young and maybe he'll outgrow it?

so...my question is...should i go to a 3rd doctor, not tell him the history and just see what he says? anyone with experience with this? should i go for the glasses or wait?

and if i get glasses, anyone with recommendations for a place that won't kill my wallet??

just to add a disclaimer...if it turns out that DS needs glasses, im willing to go on welfare if thats what he needs. just looking for some options. TIA! Chat Icon

I would go for a third opinion and not mention that you have seen other doctors. IMO once you tell them the initial diagnosis, there is a bias to echo that same diagnosis particularly if they are friendly with each other (which sounds like the case between your initial doc and your second opinion doc).

I'd get a 3rd opinion. That was a weird response from the 2nd dr----like, why would u bother going to him if he's just going to agree w/ the original dr?

I would go for one more opinion personally! Chat Icon And, you just reminded me that I have to reschedule Jack's eye doctor appointment - so thank you! Chat Icon

Re: Would you get a 3rd opinion? sorry, kinda long.

I would get a 3rd opinion but NOT tell the history of the possible dx that you got from the other dr's.

Also, did you check places like wize eyes and cheeper peepers for infant / toddler glasses? They might be more reasonable.

Good Luck !!!

i would absolutely go for the 3rd opinion and tell the doctor flat out (without giving names).

i have seen 2 doctors already and the 2nd seemed to just blatantly agree with the first, without an exam and then after the exam agreed again...that just made me feel weird....so i wanted to get another opinion...

I'd go for the third opinion and not mention anything. Chat Icon No disclaimer necessary. You are just trying to do the right thing mama.

Get a 3rd opinion, make sure he's seeing an opthomologist, not an optometrist, I think the neighbor's opinion shouldn't count at all (he is not an MD and hasn't checked your DS)....

and I know a 1yr old with glasses in my DD's playgroup...so I don't think its too young.

I think this is the best thing to do Chat Icon Any chance you could take a 1/2 day one day (morning or afternoon) so that you could take him sooner? If not, it will be fine next month.

If he needs them, there's a website that you can get glasses for way cheap (I sent in my Fendi frames and they put in the lenses for me, and I purchased a cheapo frame from them as my second backup pair - both times I only paid $40-60! They sell kids glasses too, so hopefully you'll find something there and not have to spend so much!). Just let me know!

i have the rx, its just most places don't carry frames for infants unless they specialize it them. ugh DH saw an ad for JC Penney and called, but they don't carry infants. thanks tho!

Have him try on a couple of pairs at the doctors office. If you find one you like, look on the inside of the leg of the glasses. It will have a set of 3 numbers (like 22-10-30). Sometimes it only has 2 numbers. Those are the measurements of the width of the lense, the width of the bridge of the glasses, and the length of the leg.

Once you have an idea of what size he needs, you can even go online and look for infant glasses (if the website below doesn't have infant glasses). Then just send them the frames to have the lenses put in (that's exactly what I did with my Fendi frames - tried on in a store, went online, bought them for like 1/2 the price, then sent them to this site to get the lenses).

Website is www.39dollarglasses.com
