at what age can you get rid of them?

Depends on the kids. You may need it for crowd control longer than you need it for safety on stairs. I would expect most kids to be safe on stairs at 3.

when they can go up and down alone.

we never had a gate but we had a door to the stairs.

DD is 14 months old and can open the door and goes up and down as she pleases...

i keep the door on, if wee have friends over.

but my guess is when they can go up and down unassisted you can get rid of them

I am not sure, my DS is 3 years old and we have a gate on his bedroom door (we are in a cape) and his room is upstairs and ours is downstair, so while he is great on the stairs I do not want him going down the stairs in the middle of the night in the dark. I am not sure when I will get rid of the gate maybe in a year or so.

I never blocked going up the stairs or the top of the stairs (small landing with doors to bedrooms and bathroom) just on the actual bedrooms. I never wanted to make the stairs off limits at all times.
