Frequent Cruisers

When coming home, if a cruise docks at 6am or 7am...how much time should I allow to get to the airport? Are they typically right on schedule, or should I book a flight later that night just in case?

Re: Frequent Cruisers

Walk off the boat with your luggage - this way you won't have to search for it on the pier. Don't put it outside your door the night before so that the crew takes it off for you.

Noon-ish is fine. We walked off Oasis of the Seas early, and caught an 11am flight. Airport was only 15 minutes away from the port in Ft. Lauderdale.

I agree. If there are any problems for the ship clearing Customs at the port, you don't want to miss your flight.

Where are you getting off? That makes a difference too. For places like FLL or San Juan - I try not to get anything earlier than 12 - even 1 or 2 is a usually okay. You don't need a night flight (Europe is a bit different but my parents usually get a 4 or 5 pm flight when they cruise in Europe). The later obviously the easier and less stressful on you.

Most of the time you do dock on time - BUT there are NO guarantees, weather, other issues can bring you in late. Docking isn't the only thing that can delay you. Sometimes disembarkation can be held off - if everyone hasn't cleared customs, etc. I have been held up when we disembarked and couldn't find one of our bags b.c it was placed in the wrong color/number section - and we lost 45 mins looking for it.

Most of the time they are trying to hurry and get people off the boat so they can clean for the next cruise - but you just never know. One time we made an 11 am flight - BUT it was VERY stressful and we barely made it. You are better to have extra time and either take one of the tours offered by the cruiseline, or sit and have lunch at the airport than you are to be stressing about getting through security and if you will make it to the airport in time.

Re: Frequent Cruisers

In May we cruised out of San Juan and docked in Brooklyn. We were supposed to disembark at 8am and ended up getting off the ship at 2pm. You never know. Like the pp said, I would definitely make sure it's after 12. You don't want to deal with a headache.

We always booked our flight late in the afternoon. You never know what can happen and you don't want to either be rushing around like a lunatic or chance missing your flight.

Re: Frequent Cruisers

I've never arrived late to the port. But disembarking takes FOREVER! Usually we dock at 8 AM and are home by 12 when we dock in Manhattan. And we only live 30-45 minutes from the dock depending on traffic. Also, the last cruise we were on took an extra hour because of some customs issue. Soooooooo hopefully that helps you!
