Spinoff to CaMacho's sippy cup question...added another question.

When do we take the bottle away? My friend just posted on FB that her kids are officially off the bottle and her DS is the same age as mine. I thought I had plenty of time. DS now drinks water and juice from the sippy cup, but no where near comfortable with it like the bottle.

ETA DS is 10 months

ETA another question. Should I start replacing one bottle a day with the sippy cup?

Re: Spinoff to CaMacho's sippy cup question...

With Jack I took the last bottle away around 15 months, and he was obsessed with bottles.

I think with Tyler I will start to try once he transitions to milk. I have a feeling he will be easy since he doesn't have an attachement to them. I will do it purely for the fact that I am sick of cleaning bottles and putting them back together again.

I'm going to attempt to take it away at 1 year. We'll see...

DD is 14 months old and she still gets 3 milk bottles a day.
We tried once at a year old and it didn't go so well. She's not ready, and neither are we, really. I'll probably go a few more months and then try again.

Re: Spinoff to CaMacho's sippy cup question...

I started at 11mth to swap out one bottle a day with a straw cup. After a few days I would replace another bottle. I noticed that my son got just as excited for the straw cup as the bottle so I eliminated the bottle. We have been bottle free for about 2wks, he turns one next week.

My ped recommended to get rid of the bottle when we switched to milk, cold turkey. She indicated that it gets harder the longer you wait.

You have plenty of time, I wouldn't worry! My kids did give up their bottles on the early side though- 8 months for DS and 9 months for DD.

DS will be 2 and still has his bottles. He likes the milk from it and I think the nutrients are more important at this point than throwing out the bottle. He drinks water and juice from cups and sippy cups but not milk.

Re: Spinoff to CaMacho's sippy cup question...

i said i wouldn't give him cow's milk in a bottle, which meant losing them by 12mos. He was totally off the bottles around 11.5mos.

He drinks water from a straw sippy, and milk from a regular spout.

Re: Spinoff to CaMacho's sippy cup question...

by 13 months DS was still getting a morning bottle and a few months later he finally switched over to sippy, I didn't make it a big deal once he turned 12 months, I gradually switched over when he was ready to give it up

Same here with my 18 m/o DS, and his ped. is fine with it, as am I.
