For those who ordered cupcakes for a party, do you recall what you paid per cupcake? OR did you make your own?

And if you did order them and you're in the Huntington area/or they delivered, where did you order them from?

FWIW, I need at least 5 dozen, but I'm leaning towards 6 dozen, which is why I'm hesitant to bake them myself (plus I'm not known for my baking skills. Chat Icon )

I was quoted $1.10, which isn't absurd, but considering I just want basic cupcakes, the idea of paying that much for them kills me. (I plan on supplying the cupcake liners, and the crystal sugar for the edges if need be. I have specific colors in mind, so all those supplies have been ordered already.) The only reason why I am leaning towards ordering them is because of the number I need and it's one less thing I need to worry about for my DD's birthday party.

WWYD??? Order them or bake them yourself? Chat Icon

Honestly at that price...(which it costs for a whole box of cake mix that makes 24 cupcakes) and the fact that your supplying most of the materials I think its better for you to do yourself. You can bang out a large quantity easily and if your not doing anything ewllaborate besides icing them and rolling them around in some sugar Id say its a money saver for you to do at home. Make somebody help you too Chat Icon

You may not want to go by me because I'm lazy as sin but... Chat Icon
I'd probably order them.
Only because it's one less thing to do- if you are throwing a party Lord knows you have tons to worry about.
I find baking (esp cupcakes) to be SO tedious.
Plus I don't have an artistic or neat bone in my body so anytime I frost cupcakes it looks like a 3 year old did it! Chat Icon

My opinion- time is money. I'd order...

Just do them yourself, so easy.

I like to dip my cupcakes. So, I frost them first and then dip them in a bowl or sprinkles/M&Ms/mini choc chips etc. So easy to do.

I'm actually making 48 cupcake for my friends daughters bday party this weekend. That's two boxes of cake mix and I make homemade icing to put in a decorator bag and squeeze out through a nice decorators tip and sprinkle with some sugar crystals! Oh and top with a few toppers.

I say bake your own, especially since you have all the supplies. The cupcakes can be made ahead of time at your leisure (not to far in advance though Chat Icon ) then ice quickly the day of! Simple Chat Icon

I think I paid about $2.50/cupcake for about 6 dozen as well so I think $1.10 is a fantastic price.

We caved... went to a cupcake bakery by us and placed an order. Paying close to double what you were quoted Chat Icon but I don't care. I don't have to do them! Chat Icon And they are DELICIOUS, I could never make cupcakes like these.

I reccomend this too!!! Especially that I'm the friend GETTING the cupcakes Chat Icon Chat Icon (TY CARRIE!!!)

In all seriousness....If I wasn't lucky enough to have a great friend who offered to make them for me, I'd make them myself....they are pretty easy to do...

ets - they aren't hard to do, but they can be time consuming....if that's a factor for you.

Wow, this is really cool - I've never seen cupcakes made to look like a solid cake before. Very cool. I wonder if they do other shapes (like a cross).

I usually use Cupcakes Catering but I usually get slightly fancier ones and they are more $$. Not sure how much her basic ones are, but she definitely delivers to your area. She'll also set up and she has some great stands. I am using her again in Oct for DD's Christening.

Hey I'm no Cupcakes Catering or anything, but .....simplicity to look professional is my thing! If that makes any sense. LOL

How can I mess up red velvet and chocolate cupcakes with pink "stiff" icing!

As for the OP, if you don't have the time, then I'd purchase them!

Re: For those who did Cupcakes for a party (instead of a cake)?

I made for DD's 2nd birthday about 3 dozen smaller cupcakes with 3 of the larger cupcakes as cakes. I used the smaller cupcakes for the kids, and the large cupcakes were for the adults.

Those came out cute!

What type of pastry bag and decorating tip did you use for the frosting? I have the plastic bags, but I'm debating whether I should purchase one of the reusable bags. And I feel like all my decorating tips are too small to achieve the look you did? Do you happen to know what number tip you used?

And did you make the icing or is it store bought?

I'm leaning towards doing them myself, mainly because my DH might kill me if he finds out how much I spent on the cookies. Damn that Etsy site! Chat Icon

What about costco cupcakes? They are HUGE and very inexpensive. They are very pretty too and you could always add the crystal sugar on top yourself

Ok this is going to sound nuts. I went to Crumbs for my daughter's class party.

Yeah. They were more than $1/cupcake but they were a huge hit.

I have gone to Pathmark & they were fine. They did the cake - pull aparts. I think they were very inexpensive & they tasted fine. (Kids do actually prefer crappy cupcakes as opposed to Cupcake CafeChat Icon)

I've gone to Stop & Shop. They were definitely over $1 - in fact, I remember going back & forth because I was quoted a lower price & they insisted I was wrong.

edited to add:
There is a huge baking supply company on 26th Street (Manhattan) ifyou want me to pick anything up.

I did have Waldbaums do Joseph's cupcakes & they were inexpensive. Then I added the silver balls on top to make them moon-like (Vanderbilt Planterium party)

Thank You!

I use both types of bags, the reusable and the disposable. I'll be using the disposable for this weekends batch of icing because I'm decorating the cupcakes when I get there. (less to clean up! Chat Icon ) I use tip 1M and make my icing. The recipe for the icing is:
1 cup solid white vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon Wilton Flavor(Clear Vanilla, Almond or Butter) **I use 1/2 clear vanilla and 1/2 butter, I never use Almond just in case of allergies!
2 tablespoons of water
1 lb pure cane confectioners' sugar (approx 4 cups)
1 tablespoon Wilton Meringue Powder
A pinch of salt(approx 1/4-1/2 tsp) **I use none

Cream shortening flavoring and water. Add dry ingredients (**slowly, 1/4 cup at a time, otherwise your kitchen will be covered with powder Chat Icon) and mix on medium speed until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together. Blend and additional minute or so, until creamy.

** I add the coloring to the mix at the end.
** I also use a stand up mixer, but a hand held can be used, just be careful not to blow out the motor since this is a stiffer icing
** you can add water to "soften" it up if too stiff, usually no more than a tablespoon
**if you want to make chocolate add 3/4 cup of cocoa
**the recipe for this icing does not need to be refrigerated, since there is no real butter, eggs or cream!

I have used the disposable bags - very easy. The Wilton site and Facebook page is actually very helpful too. You can find what look you want and the corresponding tip.

I already have one stand. (It's a "Princess & Pirates" theme.) Much to my displeasure, I purchased this set (stand, liners & toppers) for the "Princess" stand.

My daughter is really into the Disney Princesses, so I'm using it to make her happy. For the"Pirates" side, I was just going to buy a white cardboard stand and spray paint it black and put a Jolly Roger flag or something along those lines on top. (The cupcake liners are a mix of solid black and red.)

I ordered them from Cupcakes Catering, she will deliver to the Huntington area.
I don't remember how much they were per cupcake, we got 50 cupcakes and one large cupcake as a topper.
She did a fabulous job, I wouldn't hesitate to use her again!

I got MINI-cupcakes which IMO were the perfect size for the kids (2 and 3-year-olds). I got a nice discount froom the bakery where my niece works so I can't give you an idea on prices. I do believe lilycakes, who made them for us last year, makes gorgeous cupcakes at reasonable prices...

BTW tht's a LOT of cupcakes!!
